    Abstract: Polynucleotide (I) that encodes a protein (II) of the stress response and isolatable from Ashbya gossypii. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) Oligonucleotides (ON) that hybridize to (I), particularly under stringent conditions; (2) Polynucleotides (Ia) that hybridize to ON, particularly under stringent conditions, and encode a gene product from the genus Ashbya or its functional equivalent; (3) Polypeptides (IIa) encoded by (I), or its fragments, or (Ib), or having an amino acid (aa) sequence that includes at least 10 consecutive aa from any of 10 sequences reproduced, or their functional equivalents; (4) Expression cassettes (EC) containing (I), ON or (Ia) linked to regulatory sequences; (5) Recombinant vector containing at least one EC; (6) Prokaryotic or eukaryotic host transformed with at least one vector of (5), or in which at least one gene encoding (IIa) is modulated, or in which the biological activity of (IIa) is altered; (7) Method for identifying effector targets for modulating microbial production of Vitamin B2 or its precursors or derivatives; (8) Method for modulation microbial production of Vitamin B2 or its precursors or derivatives by treatment with an effector that interacts with (IIa) or nucleic acid encoding it; (9) Effectors (X) for (IIa) or nucleic acid encoding it; and (10) Microbial production of Vitamin B2 or its precursors or derivatives using a host cell of (6).
