    Abstract: Partially neutralized carboxylate-rich copolymers, processes for their preparation and methods of using the same are disclosed, the copolymers comprising: monomers (A), (B), and (C); wherein monomer (A) comprises at least one monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid, and is present in an amount of 30% to 79.99% by weight; wherein monomer (B) comprises at least one monoethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of acids corresponding to general formula I, acids corresponding to general formula II, anhydrides thereof, and other hydrolyzable derivatives thereof, and is present in an amount of 20.01% to 70% by weight: (HOOC)R1C-CR2(COOH) (I) R1R2C-C(-(CH2)n-COOH)(COOH) (II) wherein R1 and R2 each independently represent H or a straight-chain or branched, optionally substituted alkyl radical having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or, in the case of (I), R1 and R2 together being an optionally substituted alkylene radical having 3 to 20 carbon atoms, and n represents an integer from 0 to 5; wherein monomer (C) comprises at least one additional ethylenically unsaturated comonomer, and is present in an amount of 0% to 40% by weight; wherein the carboxylate-rich copolymer is partially neutralized with at least one amine and the carboxylate-rich copolymer has a degree of neutralization of 2 to 18 mol %, based on the total amount of all COOH groups of the monocarboxylic and dicarboxylic acids; and wherein the carboxylate-rich copolymer has an average molecular weight Mw of at least 3000 g/mol.

    Abstract: Copolymer, formed from 1-99 mol.% of at least one monoethylenic unsaturated dicarboxylic acid derivative (I), 99-1 mol.% of at least one further monoethylenic unsaturated monomer (II) with a structural unit that is different from (I) and optionally 0-30 mol.% of at least one further ethylenic unsaturated monomer (III) with structural units that is different from (I) and (II) is new. Copolymer, formed from 1-99 mol.% of at least one monoethylenic unsaturated dicarboxylic acid derivative (I) of formulae (Ia-If), 99-1 mol.% of at least one further monoethylenic unsaturated monomer (II) with a structural unit that is different from (I) and optionally 0-30 mol.% of at least one further ethylenic unsaturated monomer (III) having structural units that is different from (I) and (II), where the quantities of the monomers are related respectively to the total quantity of all monomeric units in the copolymer, is new. R 1>(n+1)-valenced 1-40C hydrocarbon (where non adjacent carbon atom is substituted with O and/or N); either R 2>, R 3>H, CH 3, 2-6C alkyl; or R 2>+R 3>1,3-propylene or 1,4-butylene; R 4>H, 1-10C hydrocarbon or -(R 1>-X 1>n); M : H or cation; X 1>functional group such as -SR 5>, -CSNR 5>2or CN; R 5>H or 1-6C hydrocarbon; and n : 1-3. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a method for preparing copolymers in which an unmodified copolymer is prepared from 1-99 mol.% of structural unit of formula(e) (IId1) and/or (IId2) from unmodified monoethylenic unsaturated dicarboxylic acid, their salts or anhydrides and 99-1 mol.% of at least one further monoethylenic unsaturated monomer (II) and optionally 0-30 mol.% a further monomer (III), comprising reacting the unmodified copolymer with difunctional alcohol of formula HO-R 1>-X61 nand/or difunctional amine of formula HR 4>N-R 1>-X 1>nto form a modified copolymer; and (2) a copolymer obtained by the above method.
