Abstract: Passivating layer (I) on a metallic surface is prepared by contacting the surface with a composition comprising a water-soluble, nitrogen-containing polymer that is a base, whereby an aqueous solution of the polymer forms a precipitate at the metal surface upon addition of one or more metal salts at a pH of less than 7. Independent claims are included for: (a) metallic surfaces having the passivating layer (I); (b) a construction (II) comprising a metallic surface, the passivating layer (I) and further paint layers and; (c) a process for the formation of the construction (II) by formation of the passivating layer (I) on the metallic surface followed by painting.

Abstract: A composition for the treatment of metal surfaces comprises 50-99.9 wt.% (meth)acrylic acid or its salts, 0.1-50 wt.% of a carboxylate containing monomer or corresponding salts, anhydrides or esters and/or 0.1-50 wt.% monomers containing phosphoric and/or phosphoric acid groups or their salts, 0-30 wt.% of other compatible monomers and water or another solvent suitable for the dispersion, suspension or emulsification of monomers. A composition (I) for the treatment of metal surfaces comprises: (a) 50-99.9 wt.% (meth)acrylic acid or its salts, 0.1-50 wt.% of a carboxylate containing monomer of formula (1) or corresponding salts, anhydrides or esters and/or 0.1-50 wt.% monomers containing phosphoric and/or phosphonic acid groups or their salts, 0-30 wt.% of other compatible monomers; (b) water or another solvent suitable for the dispersion, suspension or emulsification of (A) and optionally; (c) other surface active agents, dispersing agents, suspending agents and/or emulsifiers. La invencion se refiere tambien a copolimeros ricos en carboxilato que tiene un bajo grado de neutralizacion y se obtienen a traves del metodo de la invencion, y al uso de los copolimeros para tratar superficies y como agentes de union para la union de fibra.
