Abstract: Copolymers prepared by a process comprising free-radical polymerizing: (a) more than 15 to 40% by weight of at least one monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid; (b) 30 to less than 85% by weight of ethyl methacrylate; and (c) 0 to 50% by weight of at least one additional free-radically polymerizable monomer other than the at least one monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid and ethyl methacrylate; wherein the total amount of (a), (b) and (c) equals 100% by weight; with the proviso that where the process comprises a solution polymerization, (a) consists of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, and (c) is an ester of (meth)acrylic acid and an aliphatic C 8 -C 18 -alcohol, then the ester of (meth)acrylic acid and an aliphatic C 8 -C 18 -alcohol is not present in an amount of 5 to 40% by weight; and with the proviso that where (c) is selected from the group consisting of N-vinylpyrrolidone, N-vinylcaprolactam and mixtures thereof; then the N-vinylpyrrolidone, N-vinylcaprolactam or mixture thereof is present in an amount of less than 5% by weight.

R1 = H or Me; X = divalent polyoxyalkylene group having 1-50 oxyalkylene units; and R2 = H or 1-20C aliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbyl (preferably 1-4C alkyl). An Independent claim is included for a novel aqueous dispersion paint (A') comprising a pigment and an emulsion copolymer, where the pigment content is 40-200 wt.% based on the copolymer content, the copolymer has a glass transition temperature below 30 degrees C and the copolymer comprises (wt.%) (1) 1-8C alkyl (meth)acrylates and/or vinyl aromatic compounds (40-99.5) (2) monomer (I) (0.5-30); and (3) further monomers (0-50).

Abstract: Use is claimed as a rheological modifier for hair cosmetics of an ampholytic copolymer with a molar excess of anionogenic/anionic groups over cationogenic/cation groups or vice-versa, the copolymer being obtained by radical polymerization of specified unsaturated compounds optionally in presence of a silicon compound containing a polyether group and/or a radically polymerizable olefinically unsaturated double bond. Use is claimed as a rheological modifier for hair cosmetics of an ampholytic copolymer with a molar excess of anionogenic/anionic groups over cationogenic/cation groups or vice-versa, the copolymer being obtained (optionally in the presence of a silicon compound containing a polyether group and/or a radically polymerizable olefinically unsaturated double bond) by radical polymerization of (A) a compound with a radically polymerizable alpha ,beta -unsaturated double bond and an anionogenic and/or anionic group; (B) a compound like (a) but having cationgenic/cationic rather than anionogenic/anionic groups; and (C) a radically polymerizable crosslinking compound with >=2 alpha ,beta -unsaturated double bonds.
