Abstract: A method for the production of 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-penta-1,4-dienyl-substituted oxo-cyclohexane or oxo-cyclohexene derivatives involves cathodic reduction of the corresponding 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-pent-4-en-1-ynyl derivative in a split or quasi-split electrolytic cell at pH 2-9. A method for the production of compounds of formula (I) or (I') involves the cathodic reduction of compounds of formula (II) in a split or quasi-split electrolytic cell at pH 2-9. R = oxo-cyclohexyl or oxy-cyclohexenyl (both optionally substituted with hydroxyl, alkoxy and/or alkyl groups), the oxo groups being in the form of an acetal, ketone or enol ether; R = a hydroxyl group or a protecting group which can converted into OH by hydrolysis. An Independent claim is also included for an electrolytic cell for use in this process in which the working electrode is made of solid graphite, sheets of graphite felt or carbon felt, woven fabric with carbon-coated electrolyte-contact surfaces, carbon-filled porous solids, or porous metal.
