Abstract: Liquid-crystalline carbamyl-containing polycondensates composed of (a) aromatic hydroxycarboxylic and/or aminocarboxylic acids in which the hydroxyl and amino groups are not vicinal to the carboxyl group, (b) from 0.1 to 20 mol % of urea, (c) aromatic dihydroxy, diamino and/or hydroxy-amino compounds in which the hydroxyl and amino groups are not vicinal, (d) a molar amount equivalent to the total amount of components b and c of an aromatic dicarboxylic acid in which the carboxyl groups are not vicinal, the preparation thereof and fibers, films and moldings prepared therefrom.

Abstract: New fully aromatic thermotropic polyesters consist, by mol., of : (A) 30-60% 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, (B) 20-35 % mixt of: (B1) tetephthalic acid and (B2) isophthalic acid in molar ratio (B1) : (B2) 1.04 : 1 to 19 : 1 (1.5 : 1 to 10 : 1), and (C) 20-35 % mixt of : (C1) hydroquinone, (C2) 4,4'-dihydroxydiphenyl and (C3) 0-5 (0.5-5) esp 1-4 % dihydroxy cpd having formula (I) R,R' each = 1- alkyl, halogen or aryl; n, p each = 1, 2 or 3; m = 0 or 1. The molar ratio (C1) : (C2) is 0.1 : 1 to 2.67 : 1 (0.5 : 1 to 2.33 : 1) and the molar ratio (B) : (C) is 0.9 to 1.1 : 1.
