Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing (meth)acrylic acid esters by transesterification of the (meth)acrylic acid with an alkanol in the presence of an acid catalyst, a polymerization inhibitor and an organic solvent that forms an azeotropic mixture with water. The reaction mixture is heated to the boiling point of the mixture in a reactor that comprises a distillation unit with a column and a condenser. The azeotropic mixture is distilled off, the organic solvent is returned to the column as reflux and at least a part of the column reflux is contacted with copper or a copper-containing material. The inventive method is advantageous in that substantially no polymerizate is produced in the distillation column.

The continuous recovery of (meth)acrylic acid (I) from a reaction gas (II), obtained by catalytic gas phase oxidation, comprises: (i) quenching (II) by vapor cooling with a high-boiling solvent (III), (ii) separating (I) by absorption in (III), (iii) separating the (I)-containing (III) into a first partial stream (PS1) containing mainly (I) and a second partial stream (PS2) containing mainly (III), (iv) recycling PS2 to step (ii) and (v) recovering (I) from PS1 by distillation and recycling liquid residual streams to step (i), Step (iii) is carried out by rectification.

Abstract: A process for the production of esters of (meth)acrylic acid comprises reaction of (meth)acrylic acid and 6-10C alkanols in a reaction zone, distillation of the mixture in a column and separation of the organic phase, which is at least partially recycled to the reaction zone. A process for the production of esters of (meth)acrylic acid comprises reaction of (meth)acrylic acid and 6-10C alkanols in a reaction zone comprising at least one reaction region in the presence of an acid esterification catalyst whereby the resulting byproduct water containing mixture is distilled over a column and the distillate is separated into an aqueous and organic phase and the organic phase is at least partially recycled to the reaction zone. The aqueous phase is essentially fully discharged and the organic phase is recycled in the reaction zone by the separating region of the column.
