Abstract: A system and method for treating a fluid carrying a biological contaminant to which a photoactive material has been bound include a treatment device that defines a flow passage with a gap. The system and method operate to establish a flow of fluid from the inlet end of the gap to the outlet end of the gap. The system and method expose the fluid, as it transits the gap, to a source of radiation that activates the photoactive material bound to the contaminant. The system and method also mix the fluid as it flows within the gap.

Abstract: A system (10) and method for treating a fluid carrying a contaminant to which a photoactive material has been bound include a treatment device (12) that defines a flow passage (36) with a dap (28). The system and method operate to establish a flow of fluid from the inlet (38) end of the gap (28) to the outlet end (40) of the, gap (28). The system and method also channel he flow of fluid in the gap (28) in succession through one or more paths. The system and method esta- blished at least two discrete sources of ra- diation (30), in the flow path (36) at spaced, apart locations along the direc- lion of fluid flow. At least one of the ra- diation sources (30) comprises a photodi- ode. The system and method further in- clude a control far operating each dis- crete source of radiation at a selected wavelength within the prescribed range to activate the photoactive material bound to the contaminant. Upon activa- tion, the material eradicates the contami- nant. The system and method provide ex- tracorporeal treatment of fluids like blood to quickly and effectively eradicate infection agents at relatively high flow rates.

Abstract: A blood processing chamber (22) separates blood into constituents including a plasma constituent that includes a platelet volume. An optical monitor (98) detects the optical density of the plasma constituen t and generates a first output indicative of the optical density. A processing element (100) integrates the first output relative to the volum e of plasma constituent and generates an integrated output. The integrated output correlates to the platelet volume. A second processing element (72) generates a third output based, at least in part, upon the integrated output, which encompasses parameters for storing the platelet volume.

Abstract: System transmit a control signal between a rotating element and a stationary element of a blood separation centrifuge (78). An interface control system (234) mounts the element that views the interface on a rotating element of the centrifuge. The interface control system (234) includes a light source (236) and a light detector (244) on a viewing head (238) and a data link (278) for transmitting light intensity signals from the viewing head (238) to an interface control circuit (270) on the stationary frame of the centrifuge (78). The data link (278) includes an intensity control circuit (252) which adjusts the input to the light source (236) and a second light source (254).

Abstract: Blood processing systems and methods convey blood drawn from a donor through a blood processing circuit to separate the blood into at least one targeted blood component for collection. The systems and methods derive an estimated effect of the procedure upon the donor. The estimated effect can be expresse d in terms of a net blood fluid volume loss, or as a hematodcrit of the donor after completion of the desired blood collection procedure. The systems and methods present the estimated effect to an operator for viewing, reading, or offloading.

Abstract: A method of separating a selected component, such as platelets, using a centrifuge, comprises separating the fluid into components in three regions (104,106,198) and conveying fluid into the centrifuge while discharging components from the outer two regions through respective ports (50c,50b). Also during such discharge, the selected component is accumulated in the intermediate region 9108) and, after a predetermined volume of one of the other components has been discharged, discharging the third component through one of the ports (50b).
