    Abstract: A method and system for maintaining a routing path between a selected workstation (18) and a mobile workstation (36) within a multisegment local area network (10) wherein individual segments (12,14,16) are interconnected by a router device (28,30) and wherein selected segments (14,16) include radio frequency transceivers adapted to provide a wireless communications link with mobile workstations (36). Each time communication is established between a mobile workstation (36) and a selected workstation (18), two routing table entries are established which identify a segment location (14) for the mobile workstation (36) and a segment location (12) for the selected workstation (18) within a routing table (86,84) associated with each router device (28,30). Thereafter, all routing table entries which identify the segment location (14) for the mobile workstation (36) are automatically deleted in response to a termination of communications between the mobile workstation (36) and the radio frequency transceiver. Routing path determination does not require the maintenance of routing path information at each workstation within the multisegment local area network.

    Abstract: First and second data processing terminals (12, 28) are coupled together via at least one modem (36). A stream of data is supplied to the modem, which has a data transfer mode and a command mode while that modem is operating in the data transfer mode in a first communication session. A preselected escape character followed by a selected command sequence is inserted into the data stream and is detected and utilized by the modem to automatically initiate a second communication session by specifying the network, node, application, service level and the like for the second communication session. Thereafter, selected data within the data stream may be preceded by the preselected escape character and a session identification command sequence and thereby accurately identified as associated with a particular communication session, without requiring the data processing terminal application to have knowledge of data packet protocols and formats.

    Abstract: A method and system are disclosed for permitting selected command sequences to be processed by a modem during data transfer operations. A preselected escape character is designated and inserted into a data stream to be applied to a modem in order to identify a selected command sequence which follows. A termination character is inserted into the data stream following the selected command sequence. Upon detection of the preselected escape character, the selected command sequence is coupled to a command processor within the modem and processed. In applications in which the modem is coupled between a data processing system and a cellular telephone communication channel, the selected command sequence may be utilized to transmit communication channel parameter status queries to a cellular telephone associated with the modem. In this manner, the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI), bit error rate, or other indications of communication channel status may be queried. An identical technique may be utilized to transmit a response to each such query to the data processing system, permitting real time display of cellular communication channel status information during data transfer.

    Abstract: BINARY LOGIC STRUCTURE EMPLOYING PROGRAMMABLE LOGIC ARRAYS AND USEFUL IN MICROWORD GENERATION APPARATUS Binary logic structure is described which requires less space on an integrated circuit chip. This structure includes an encode programmable logic array responsive to a first group of binary input signals for producing a smaller number of binary signals which are encoded to identify different binary value combinations for the first group of binary input signals. This structure further includes a decode programmable logic array responsive to a second group of binary input signals and to the encoded binary signals produced by the encode programmable logic array for producing binary output signals representing logical functions of binary input signals in both the first and second groups. The chip space occuppied by the encode programmable logic array is less than the additional chip space that would be required if the encode and decode programmable logic arrays were replaced by a single programmable logic array for receiving all the binary input signals in both the first and second groups. When used to provide microword generation apparatus for a microprogrammed digital system, the encode programmable logic array is responsive to a plural-bit system instruction for producing a plural-bit instruction identification signal uniquely representative of such system instruction but having a smaller number of bits than the system instruction. In such case, the decode programmable logic array is responsive to the instruction identification signal and to number signals produced by a sequence counter for producing a sequence of microwords needed to execute the system instruction.
