    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound useful as a raw material for medicines and agrochemicals and cleaning agents or the like for producing electronic materials in good yield by neutralizing a mixture solution of a pyruvate with water, a lower alcohol and 1,2-dichloroethane, then heating the resultant mixture solution, cooling the heated solution, separating the formed crystal by filtration and azeotropically dehydrating the resultant system. SOLUTION: A mixture solution of an alkali metallic pyruvate (e.g. sodium pyruvate) with water in a molar amount of =0.7 based on the alkali metallic pyruvate (e.g. ethanol) and 1,2-dichloroethane in a weight of >=0.1 based on the alkali metallic pyruvate is neutralized with a mineral acid (e.g. sulfuric acid), then heated at 40 deg.C to a temperature below the boiling point of the mixture solution and subsequently cooled to

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound useful as a raw material for medicines and agrochemicals and cleaning agents or the like for producing electronic materials in good yield by adding 1,2-dichloroethane to a reactional solution containing pyruvic acid, water, ethanol and a pyruvic acid ester and distilling off the components. SOLUTION: When pyruvic acid and ethanol are heated in the presence of an acidic catalyst to produce ethyl pyruvate, 1,2-dichloroethane in a weight of >=0.1 based on the pyruvic acid is added to a reactional solution containing the pyruvic acid, water, ethanol and the ethyl pyruvate and the resultant solution is heated to distill off the 1,2-dichloroethane, water, ethanol and ethyl pyruvate. The distillates are then cooled and the 1,2-dichloroethane layer separated from an aqueous layer is returned to a thermal reactor to thereby produce the objective ethyl pyruvate useful as a raw material for producing medicines and agrochemicals and cleaning agents or the like for producing electronic materials in good yield.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject compound useful as a raw material for medicines and agrochemicals, cleaning agents for producing electronic materials or the like in high yield by distilling and purifying a lower alkyl ester of pyruvic acid in the presence of an epoxy group-containing compound and a quaternary ammonium group-containing compound. SOLUTION: When a lower alkyl ester of pyruvic acid (e.g. methyl pyruvate) is distilled and purified, a compound having epoxy group (e.g. a bisphenol A type epoxy compound) and a compound having a quaternary ammonium group (e.g. triethylbenzylammonium chloride) and having a higher boiling point than that of the lower alkyl ester of the pyruvic acid under atmospheric pressure in respective weights of 0.001-0.2 based on the lower alkyl ester of the pyruvic acid are subjected to the distillation and purification thereof. Thereby, the objective high-purity lower alkyl ester of the pyruvic acid, useful as a raw material for producing medicines and agrochemicals and cleaning agents or the like for producing electronic materials without containing chloride ions is obtained.

    Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce a pyruvic acid lower alkyl ester from an aqueous solution of pyruvic acid. SOLUTION: A lower alcohol is added to an aqueous solution of pyruvic acid and heated, then the resultant solution of pyruvic acid and a pyruvic acid lower alkyl ester is mixed with an organic solvent azeotropic with water to remove water in the system, thus further the reaction is continued while adding a lower alcohol corresponding to remaining pyruvic acid and thionyl chloride.
