    Abstract: The reaction canister assembly comprises: a reaction canister in the form of a trough having a floor and spaced first and second sidewalls and first and second endwalls defining an open mouth. It has a substantially cylindrical inflator positioned within the canister below the open mouth and against the floor, the inflator having gas emission ports located substantially solely at one end of it. There is a substantially rectangular diffuser sheet having first and second mounting edges extending substantially the length of the trough, first and second ends substantially abutting the respective first and second endwalls of said canister. The sheet further includes gas diffusing openings through it. A fastener secures the first mounting edge of the diffuser sheet to the first sidewall. It has a member for bringing the second mounting edge of the diffuser sheet into engagement with a portion of the reaction canister on the opposite side of the inflator while simultaneously tensioning the sheet to grip the inflator while leaving the gas diffusing openings free of blockage by the inflator.

There is an ignition chamber in gas flow communication with the interior of the canister and a gas generant within the ignition chamber. The reaction canister is adapted to enclose an airbag to be filled with gas from the gas generant upon ignition, and member for igniting the gas generant. The improvement comprises the gas generant comprising an extruded, elongated cylindrical member having an elongated length and a circular cross-section partially subdivided by radial grooves extending along the length of the member. Igniter strips are retained within a member of the radial grooves.

There is a first, locking, spline carried by the cover and retained within the first channel, and a second, latching, spline carried by the cover and retained within the second channel.

    Abstract: The installation includes an airbag module assembly including a reaction canister positionable behind an instrument panel, and a breakaway cover formed in the instrument panel. There is a tether having a first end secured to the cover and a second end connectable to the module assembly. There is a tether anchor secured to the second end of the tether. There are members for making a slip-fit engagement between the module assembly and the anchor while providing firm support during cover breakaway resulting from airbag deployment. The engagement member comprises a male connector on one of the anchor and module assembly and a female connector on the other of the anchor and module assembly. The female connector comprises a channel having a sidewall defining a slot through it and the male connector is insertable through an axial open end of the channel.
