Abstract: Production of polyisobutene (I) from a starting 4C hydrocarbon stream (II), containing isobutene, 1-butene and 2-butene, includes: (a) distillatively separating (II) into a more volatile fraction (F1) (containing most of the isobutene and 1-butene in (II)) and a less volatile fraction (F2) (containing most of the 2-butene); and (b) subjecting the 1-butene in (F1) to chemically selective reaction and separating the reaction products from the remaining components of (F1).

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing formates according to which: (a) methyl formate is partially hydrolyzed with water; (b) methyl formate an d methanol are separated by distillation from the reaction mixture obtained in step (a) while forming a stream containing formic acid and water, and; (c) t he stream containing formic acid and water from step (b) is brought together wi th the corresponding formate while forming a mixture containing the formate and water. Abstract: Formic acid-formates are produced by (a) partial hydrolysis of methyl formate (MF) with water, (b) distillation to give (S1) formic acid and water, (c) conversion of the other product from (b) (mainly MF) into a stream (S2) containing formate and water by reaction with aqueous strong base and distillation of methanol, and (d) combination of (S1) with (S2). A method for the production of formic acid-formates (I) involves: (a) partial hydrolysis of methyl formate (MF) with water; (b) distillation to give a stream (S1) containing formic acid and water; (c) conversion of the MF- and possibly methanol-containing stream from (b) into a formate- and water-containing stream (S2) by (i) reaction with a basic compound of an acid with a pKa value of at least 3 in presence of water followed by (ii) removal of methanol by distillation; and (d) combination of streams (S1) and (S2). An Independent claim is also included for apparatus for the production of (I), comprising: (A) a reactor for the hydrolysis of MF; (B) a distillation column for separating a stream containing MF, formic acid, methanol and water; (C) a column for the hydrolysis of MF with a basic compound with removal of methanol by distillation (with an inlet for the base above the inlet for the product from (B)); and (D) a column connected to the bottom of (B) for removing water from the stream containing formic acid and water.

Abstract: The product mixture from the selective, partial gas-phase oxidation of propane, propene and/or acrolein is worked up by separation to give pure acrylic acid and a by-product mixture containing aldehydes and/or alkanoic acids together with some acrylic acid. Hydrogenation (optionally after esterification) is carried out to give propionic acid and/or its esters. A method for the production of acrylic acid (AA) and propionic acid (PA) and/or their esters involves: (1) selective, partial gas-phase oxidation of propane, propene and/or acrolein on a heterogeneous catalyst in zone 1 (reaction zone), to give a mixture (A) containing acrylic acid as the main product plus aldehydes and/or saturated alkanoic acids; (2) separation in zone 2 (work-up zone) to give (i) AA with a purity of at least 90 wt.% and (ii) a by-product mixture with a total content of aldehydes and/or alkanoic acids (in mol% based on acrylic acid content) which is greater than that of fraction (i); and (3) hydrogenation (optionally after esterification) of the AA in fraction (ii) to give PA and/or its esters.

Abstract: The present invention describes a process for the preparation of ethyldimethylamine and triethylamine with the following steps: (i) reaction of a mixture of diethylamine and dimethylamine with ethylene in the presence of a catalyst from the group of alkali metal dimethylamides, alkali metal diethylamides and alkali metal hydrides (ii) removal of the catalyst (iii) distillation separation of the resulting mixture in triethylamine and ethyldimethylamine and optionally diethylamine and dimethylamine (iv) optional return of the catalyst and of the starting amines to the reaction. The process according to the invention permits the coproduction of ethyldimethylamine and diethylamine in a simple process.
