Abstract: A process for preparing an aqueous styrene-butadiene polymer dispersion by free-radical aqueous emulsion polymerization of a monomer mixture M comprising styrene, butadiene, and if desired up to 30% by weight, based on 100% by weight of monomers, of ethylenically unsaturated comonomers other than styrene and butadiene; in a polymerization vessel by a monomer feed technique in the presence of a regulator system containing, based on 100% by weight of monomers, from 0.02 to 0.5% by weight of at least one hydrocarbon HC having from 6 to 20 carbon atoms, selected from compounds which on abstraction of a hydrogen atom form a pentadienyl radical or 1-phenylallyl radical, and alpha-methylstyrene dimer, and from 0.3 to 2% by weight of an organic compound S containing at least one SH group wherein at least 30%, preferably at least 50%, in particular at least 80%, and with particular preference the entirety (or >95%) of hydrocarbon HC is included in the initial charge to the polymerization vessel.

Abstract: Paper, board and cardboard are produced by adding (i) at least one retention aid and (ii) ionic, water-insoluble, uncrosslinked, organic microparticles which have an average particle size of less than 500 nm and a content of polymerized ionic monomers of less than 1% by weight or water-insoluble, uncrosslinked, organic microparticles having an average particle size of less than 500 nm and a content of polymerized ionic monomers of not more than 10% by weight, which are obtainable by polymerizing the monomers in the presence of silica, waterglass, bentonite and/or mixtures thereof, to a paper stock and draining the paper stock over a wire.

Abstract: The use of an aqueous polymer dispersion containing at least one hydrogenated styrene/butadiene copolymer as a coating adhesive for adhesive bonding of flat substrates. An Independent claim is included for adhesive bonding of flat substrates involving: (i) coating of a first flat substrate with an aqueous polymer dispersion; (ii) drying of the coating; (iii) heating of the coating to a temperature higher than the coating activation temperature; and (iv) combining a second flat substrate with the first coated substrate to form an adhesive bond at a temperature higher than the coating activation temperature.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing an aqueous styrene-butadiene polymer dispersion by the radical aqueous emulsion-polymerisation of a monomer mixture M, containing: between 40 and 80 wt. % styrene as monomer M1; between 20 and 60 wt. % butadiene as monomer M2 and between 0 and 40 wt. %, (in relation to l00 wt. % monomers), of ethylenically unsaturated comonomers M3 that differ from styrene and butadiene, according to a monomer feed process in the presence of between 0.05 and 0.5 wt. %, (in relation to l00 wt. % monomers), of at least one hydrocarbon KW comprising between 6 and 20 C atoms, selected from compounds, which form a pentadienyl or a 1-phenylallyl radical during the abstraction of a hydrogen atom, or from alpha -methylstyrene dimers. Said method is characterised in that at least 30 % of the hydrocarbon KW is already present in the polymerisation vessel and the residual quantity of the hydrocarbon KW is fed to the polymerisation reaction during the course of the latter.

Abstract: The invention relates to paper coating slurries containing a mineral pigment and an aqueous polymer dispersion as binding agent. The invention is characterized in that the polymer dispersion is obtained by performing emulsion polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated compounds (monomers) an d in that the paper coating slurry is gelled above 35~ C, i.e. the viscosity o f the paper coating slurry at least doubles at a temperature of between 35 and 60~ C in comparison with the viscosity at 30~ C. The paper coating slurry is particularly suitable for cast-coating, wherein the coating slurry is gelled during the coating process and the coated paper is brought into contact with a metal cylinder.

Independent claims are also included for (a) aqueous polymer dispersions obtained by this method; (b) paper coating materials containing inorganic pigment(s), 5-20 parts by weight (pts. wt.) polymer dispersion as above and 0.1-5 pts. wt. conventional additives (all based on 100 pts. wt. pigment).
