    Abstract: A control device1 controls the transport of a tape 108 within a tape transport system 100. The control device comprises a determination unit 10, which includes a first and second servo channel for determining a first and second lateral position of the tape relative to the head 114, and for determining a lateral position difference between the first lateral position and the second lateral position. The control device also comprises a computing unit 11 for computing a number of unsupported wraps of the tape as a function of the lateral position difference, where the number of unsupported wraps corresponds to the number of layers of the tape around the take-up reel 112 having air layers in-between. The control device also computes a spring constant of the tape as a function of the number of unsupported wraps, a radius R1 of the take-up reel and a nominal tape path length. A calibration unit 12 calibrates at least one unit (13,14,15) of the tape transport system dependent on the spring constant.

    Abstract: A multi-channel current-perpendicular-to-plane (CPP) magnetoresistive read sensor 1 comprises a stack of layers 11-15 extending along a stacking direction z of the stack, and an edge surface S of the stack that is parallel to the stacking direction and further forms at least part of a bearing surface of the read sensor. The stack of layers comprises: a first contact layer 15, a free ferromagnetic layer 14, a non-magnetic layer 13, a spin injection ferromagnetic layer 12 and a second contact layer 11. The stack of layers further comprises a series of structures 30, each structure formed in both the first contact layer and the free layer. An edge surface of each of the structures is level with the edge surface of the stack and the series of structures extends along a direction x that is parallel to the bearing surface and perpendicular to the stacking direction. The structures may be defined by grooves 35.

    Abstract: A tape storage medium comprises a servo band SB along a longitudinal extension x of the tape TP for determining positional information. The servo band comprises a set of servo tracks ST1-6 arranged next to each other. Each servo track of the set contains a pseudo noise sequence PN_A-C of symbols, where the pseudo noise sequences of servo patterns of adjacent servo tracks are different from each other. The set of servo tracks contains at least three servo tracks with different pseudo noise sequences. The waveforms of adjacent servo tracks may be orthogonal to each other in the time domain. The servo patterns may contain additional information such as longitudinal position, manufacturing information or a servo band identifier. A tape head contains a servo reader SR where the width of the reader wSR is at least a width of a servo track wST. A read back signal of the servo reader is used for adjusting a lateral position of a tape head.

    Abstract: Method for operating a memory (flash, phase change, magnetic RAM memory) storing data in units (blocks). For each unit of a set a wear level is determined. A maximum wear level amongst the wear levels is determined, step 62. A suggestion of a subset of units for being selected for data erasure is received and at least one unit in the subset is identified for data erasure (step 62), a wear level of which unit is less than maximum wear level, as determined in step 55. The wear level is based on count of erasures. A unit comprises a set of subunits (pages) and units are suggested for data erasure subject to a number of subunits containing valid data. If wear level of each unit equals maximum wear level, a unit is identified for erasure in view of a characteristic other than wear level as in steps 57-58. The approach of the invention can be combined with garbage collection schemes, provides minimized wear imbalance and essentially same degree of usage of all blocks (steps 54-56), prolongs lifetime of the memory (endurance), and can be applied to log-structured file systems. Also claimed is a storage device comprising a controller.
