Abstract: A swivel elbow and connector assembly for a patient interface system, comprising: a ring (70) configured to be sealingly secured in an aperture of the patient interface system, the ring including a first side in an interior of the patient interface system and a second side at an exterior of the patient interface system when the ring is secured in the aperture, the ring comprising a plurality of vents configured to permit flow of gases from the interior to the exterior of the patient interface system; and an elbow (80) swivelably secured in the ring. The ring comprises a first flange (73) on the first side and a second flange (74) on the second side, the first and second flanges defining a channel that sealingly engages the aperture of the patient interface system and the second flange comprises an angled surface that directs the flow of gases from the plurality of vents at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the ring. A cross-section of an inner surface of the ring perpendicular to the direction of gas flow through the elbow is arcuate and a cross-section of an outer surface of the elbow perpendicular to the direction of gas flow through the elbow is arcuate to form a ball and socket connection with the ring.

Abstract: Disclosed is a CPAP breathing mask system with a headgear and cushion module and a seal and frame module that provide a better air-tight seal between the mask and the user’s face. The cushion and headgear module includes a one piece construction having an outer fabric layer and an inner cushioning layer encapsulated within the outer fabric layer. The cushion and headgear module includes a cushion region adapted to define a breathing chamber and form a seal with the patient’s face and a headgear region including straps adapted to maintain the cushion region in position on the patient’s face in use. The outer fabric layer and the inner cushioning layer in the cushion region are positioned about or around the patient’s airways to define the breathing chamber and form the seal around the patient’s airways. A tube connector is provided to the cushion region and adapted to communicate with air delivery tubing. The cushion region includes a first softer layer of foam and a second harder layer of foam and at least a portion of the cushion region is coated or otherwise sealed to create an air impermeable seal. The cushion and headgear module is cut by ultrasonic die cutting to provide the cushion and headgear module with substantially rounded edges. The cushion region includes a structural component to provide structural stiffness and support to the inner cushioning layer.
