Abstract: PURPOSE:To reduce terminal carboxyl groups and to improve hydrolytic resistance, by modifying a polyester consisting mainly of ethylene terephthalate with a monofunctional epoxy compound in the presence of a manganese compound. CONSTITUTION:A polyester comprising not less than 80 mol% of ethylene terephthalate repeating units is reacted with 0.1-10 wt.% of a mono functional epoxy compound, e.g., phenylglycidyl ether, in the presence of about 10-400ppm, preferably 20-200ppm based on the polyester of a manganese compound, e.g., manganese formate or manganese propionate. The manganese compound is preferably added in the form of an ethylene glycol solution.
