Abstract: Production of trialkylorthoformates (I) comprises producing diacetal (D) in a first stage, from an aqueous reaction mixture (R) of glyoxal, a monofunctional 1-6C alcohol (A), and an acid catalyst, where (D) is produced at at least 70% of equilibrium yield. In a second stage, isolated (D) is electrochemically oxidized in a liquid electrolyte (E) with (A), to give (I). Production of trialkylorthoformates (I) comprises: (1) preparing a diacetal (D) of glyoxal and a monofunctional 1-6C alcohol (A), where a liquid mixture (M1) containing water, (A), and glyoxal are brought in contact with an acid catalyst for as long a time such that the concentration of (D) in the reaction mixture (R) is at least 70% of the equilibrium concentration, followed by isolation of (D) from the reaction mixture; and (2) electrochemically oxidizing (D) in a liquid electrolyte (E) with (A) to give (I), followed by isolation of (I) from (E).

Abstract: Production of organic compounds by electrochemical reaction of corresponding organic starting compounds at graphite, carbon black or carbon electrodes in a liquid electrolyte comprises addition of a metal salt derived from a Group 1, 2, 6, 7 or 8 metal or lead, tin or rhenium to the electrolyte whereby the electrolyte has a dielectric constant of less than 20. A process for the production of organic compounds (I) by electrochemical reaction of corresponding organic starting compounds (II) at graphite, carbon black or carbon electrodes in a liquid electrolyte (E) is claimed whereby 0.01 mmol-1 mole of a metal salt (M) (calculated as moles of metal ions per kg of (E)), derived from a Group 1, 2, 6, 7 or 8 metal or lead, tin or rhenium is added to the electrolyte (E) prior to or during the electrochemical reaction and the composition of the electrolyte (E) is such that (E) has a dielectric constant of less than 20.
