Abstract: 2-(5-Nitroimidazol-2-ylvinyl)thiadiazoles of formula (I) are new: (where R1 is 1-4C alkyl opt. substd. by OH; or 1-4C alkoxy; R2 is H or Me; R3 is H, 1-24C alkyl, opt. substd. phenyl or heteroaryl). Specif. (I) are 2-methyl-5- 2-(1-methyl-5-nitroimidazol-2-yl)vinyl -1,3,4-thiadia- zole and its i-ethyl analogue. (I) also have bactericidal activity. A typical cpd. 2-methyl-5-2-(1-methyl-5-nitroimidazol-2-yl)vinyl -1,3,4-thiadia- zole is prepd. in 62% yield by heating a mixt. of 2,5-dimethyl-1,3,4-thiadiazole, 1-methyl-5-nitroimidazole-2-carboxaldehyde and ZnCl2 in acetic acid and acetic anhydride.

Abstract: The novel aromatic polyamides consist of units of formula (I): (where n = 10-10000; Ar1 is m-and/or p-aryl; Ar2 = Ar1 or the gp. -Ar3-Y-Ar4 where Ar3 and Ar4 = Ar1; Y = -S-, -O-, -SO2-, -CO-, -C(CH3)2 or a direct bond). They are stable at elevated temps., i.e. 200 degrees C, and can be prepd. from readily available materials. The aromatic polyamides specifically contain predominantly carboxyl, ester, amide and/or amino end gps.
