Abstract: Cobalt catalysts whose catalitically active composition consists of from 55 to 98% by wt. of cobalt, from 0.2 to 15% by wt. of phosphorus, from 0.2 to 15% by wt. of manganese and from 0.2 to 15% by wt. of alkali, calculated as oxide, by calcining the catalyst composition in a first step at final temperatures of from 550 to 750 DEG C and in a second step at final temperatures of from 800 to 1000 DEG C and also a process for hydrogenating organic nitriles and/or imines by use of the new cobalt catalysts.

Abstract: In a new process for the prodn of ketone of formula R1-C0-R2 (I) by reaction of a carboxylic acid of formula R1-C00H (IIa) with a carboxylic acid of formula (IIb) or with a ketone of formula (Ib) or of a mixture of (IIa), R2-C00H (IIb) and R2C0-R2 (Ia) in the gas phase in the presence of a catalyst, a catalyst is used in which at least 50% of the active mass consists of titanium dioxide and which has a specific surface of greater than 10 sq metres/gramme. In (I)-(IIb) R1, R2 = alkyl, cycloalkyl, arylalkyl, aryl or heteroaryl, at least one of R1 and R2 carrying at least one H-atom in the alpha-position.

Abstract: Amorphous metal/magnesium silicates of the general formula MxMgy(SiO2).nH2O. where M is a divalent, reducible metal atom from the group consisting of Cu, FeII, Co and Ni, x and y are numbers which together can add up to a value of 1.5 and n after drying, expressed in % by weight, ranges from 0 to 80 are prepared by subjecting a freshly precipitated magnesium silicate to an ion exchange, washing the product and then neutralizing it with an alkali and are used in catalytic reactions after the reducible metal in the metal/magnesium silicates has been converted into the metallic state with a reducing gas.
