    Abstract: Halogenation of cyclopropyl-methyl ketone (CPMK) is effected with at least one dihalo-triorganophosphorane of formula (R)3P(X)2 (I) at 80-130 deg C, where (I) is prepared in situ from a triorgano-phosphane oxide or sulphide of formula R)3P=A (II) and a halogenating agent. The novelty is that (II) is used in a catalytic amount. R = optionally saturated 1-20C aliphatic hydrocarbyl; or phenyl or (1-4C)alkyl-phenyl (both optionally substituted by 1 or 2 of F, Cl and NO2); X = Cl, Br or I; A = O or S. Also claimed are: (i) the halogenated product obtained by the process; and (ii) the preparation of cyclopropyl-acetylene (CPA) by treating the halogenated product as in (i) with a strong base at -33 to +250 deg C.

    Abstract: A process for the selective oxidation of non-cyclic unsaturated hydrocarbons (UHC) other than isobutene, especially non-cyclic poly-unsaturated alkenes, to give oxygen-containing organic compounds. The process comprises reacting the UHC, or a gas mixture containing UHC, at 150-600 (preferably 180-450) deg C with an optionally supported catalyst material based on a silver- vanadium mixed oxide of formula AgxMyVOz (I), in which x = 0.001-3; M = another element, preferably from main groups 1-6 or sub-Groups 1-3 and 5-8; y = 0-0.5; z = the number required for charge neutrality between cations and oxygen anions. Preferably x = 0.001-1, with y and z as above. Preferred (I) is a beta - or delta -silver-vanadium bronze. The catalyst may be used as an unsupported bulk material, or supported on clay, pillared clay, zeolites, aluminium phosphate, silicon carbide, silicon nitride, boron nitride, carbon, or oxides of titanium, zirconium, zinc, thorium, magnesium, calcium, barium or silicon. The process comprises (a) at least partial reduction of (I) by contact with the UHC or an oxygen-free gas mixture containing UHC, and (b) re-oxidation of the reduced catalyst with gas containing molecular oxygen or another oxygen- containing oxidising agent. Stage (a) is preferably carried out with a gas containing the UHC and a sub-stoichiometric amount of O2 (especially using air) or other oxidising agent as above, preferably dinitrogen oxide.

    Abstract: A process for the preparation of 2,5-dihydrofurans of the general formula I I where R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are identical or different and are hydrogen or C1-C4-alkyl, by the catalytic rearrangement of 3,4-epoxy-1-butenes of the general formula II II comprises the rearrangement being catalyzed by a system which contains components A, B and C, at from 60 DEG to 200 DEG C., where A is a halide of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal or an onium halide, B is an organic solubilizer for component A, and C is a Lewis acid or elemental iodine, with the proviso that at least one of components A or C is an iodide. 2,5-Dihydrofurans are intermediates for the well known tetrahydrofurans which are used as solvents, e.g. for polyvinyl chloride, polyvinylidene chloride, and other difficultly soluble organic materials, and are also used as monomers for the preparation of polytetrahydrofurans.
