    Abstract: Polyurethane foam preparation comprises reacting isocyanates with isocyanate reactive compounds in the presence of substituted imidazole catalyst(s) Preparation of polyurethane (PU) foams comprises reacting: (a) isocyanates; (b) isocyanate reactive compounds of mol. wt. 500-8500; and optionally (c) chain extenders and/or crosslinkers of mol. wt. 60-499; in the presence of (d) propellants; and (e) imidazole catalysts of formula (I); and optionally (f) aids and/or additives; R = 1-20C alkyl; R , R = phenyl, halogen, H, 1-4C alkoxy, N-mono or N,N-dialkylamino where the alkyl has 1-4C, , N-mono or N,N-dialkylaminoalkylene where the alkyl has 1-4C and the alkylene has 2-4C; X = 1-6C hydrocarbon or phenyl; A = H, OH or NRZ; Y = H, 2-4C hydroxyalkyl or 2-20C hydroxypolyalkyl; and Z = H, -4C alkyl, phenyl, 2-4C hydroxyalkyl or 2-20C hydroxypolyalkyl. Independent claims are included for the preparation of PU foams as above by reacting 2,4- and/or 2,6-toluylene diisocyanate and/or 4,4'-, 2,2'- and/or 2,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate in the presence of 0.02-0.08 wt.% triethylene diamine and 0.05-0.3 wt.% of at least one aminoalkyl and/or an aminophenyl imidazole of formulae (I) or (II) as catalyst and also the use of triethylene diamine and of at least one aminoalkyl and/or an aminophenyl imidazole in a wt. ratio of 1.6-0.06:1 in the preparation of PU foams. R4 = R except halogen and alkoxy; X = 2-6C hydrocarbon or phenyl; A = OH or NYZ.

    Abstract: A new method for preparing foamed materials involves the reaction of: (a) isocyanates; (b) compounds reactive to isocyanates of molecular weight 500-8500; and optionally (c) chain lengthening and/or crosslinking agents of molecular weight 60-499 in the presence of: (d) a propellant; and (e) a catalyst, and optionally (f) adjuvants and/or additives. Foamed materials are prepared by reaction of (a) isocyanates with (b) compounds reactive to isocyanates of molecular weight 500-8500 and optionally (c) chain lengthening and/or crosslinking agents of molecular weight 60-499 in the presence of (d) a propellant and (e) a catalyst, and optionally (f) adjuvants and/or additives. The isocyanate (a) is 2,4- and or 2,6-toluylenediisocyanate and/or 4,4, 2,2, and/or 2,4-diphenylmethane diisocyanate, and the reaction is carried out in the presence of (e1) 0.02-0.08 wt.% triethylenediamine and 0.05-0.3 wt.% of at least one aminoalkyl and/or aminophenyl-imidazole (e2) of formulas (I) and/or (II): where: R -R = phenyl, halogen, H, 1-10C linear or branched alkyl, 1-4C alkoxy, N-mono- or 1-4C N,N-dialkylamino, N-mono- or N,N-dialkylaminoalkylene, i.e. 1-4C alkyl and 2-4C alkylene, R = R , with the exception of halogen and alkoxy; Y = H, 2-4C hydroxalkyl, or hydroxypolyoxyalkyl with 2-20 alkylene oxide units, X (catalyst) = 2-6C alkylene or phenyl, Z = H, 1-4C alkylene, phenyl, 2-4C hydroxyalkyl, or 2-20C hydroxypolyoxyalkylene, and the weigh proportions of (e1) and (e2) are based on the weight proportion of component (b)(sic). Independent claims are included for: (1) A spongy plastic based on polyurethanes, prepared as above; (2) a mixture containing (e1) triethylenediamine and (e2) at least one aminoalkyl- and/or aminophenyl-imidazole at an e1 to e2 ratio of 1.6:1 to 0.06:1.

    Abstract: The reactive polyurethanes have at least two urethane, thiourethane or urea groups plus at least two NCO-inert groups, each of which undergoes cleavage of protecting groups under acid, neutral or basic conditions to form at least two groups which are reactive towards isocyanates. The reactive polyurethanes (PU) are of formula (I); A(-NC(O)-Z-B-XY)n (I) A = 2-12C alkylene (optionally unsaturated), 3-18C cycloalkylene (optionally unsaturated) or 3-18C arylene (all optionally substituted), 7-18C arylene-alkylene, a heterocyclic group, or any linear or branched sequence of two or more of these groups; Z = NR, S or O; R = H, methyl or an alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl group (optionally modified as for A), or any sequence of two or more of these; B = CH2 or alkylene, cycloalkylene or arylene groups as defined for A (or any sequence of two or more); n = 2-50; XY = a reactive residue which is inert towards isocyanate groups and which releases one or more protective groups Y under acid, neutral or basic conditions, leaving a residue X with at least two NCO-reactive groups. Independent claims are also included for (a) reactive PU obtained by reacting isocyanates of formula A(NCO)n (V) containing at least two NCO groups with compounds of formula HZ-B-XY (VI); (b) a process as described in (a) in which the molar ratio of NCO groups to HZ- groups is (0.8:1)-(1.2:1); (c) PU compounds with at least two urethane groups and twice as many NCO-reactive functional groups, obtained by hydrolysis of (I) under acid, neutral or basic conditions; (d) polyaddition or poly-condensation products obtained from PU compounds as defined in (c).

    Abstract: A process for the production of flexible polyurethane foam comprises reacting: (a) optionally modified polyisocyanates with: (b) compounds with reactive hydrogens, and (c) optionally chain extenders and/or crosslinkers, in presence of: (d) blowing agents, (e) catalysts, (f) fire retardants, and optionally: (g) other additives etc. At least 10 wt% of the compounds used in this process comprises polyether-polyols obtained by base-catalysed reaction of lower alkylene oxides with hydroxy-functional starters and subjected, during or after alkylene oxides-addition and with a water content of not more than 0.1 wt.%, to distillation at temperatures above 49 degrees C.
