Abstract: Dispersion dye prepns. contain (a) 5-40 wt. % one or more finely-divided dispersion dyes or optical brighteners, (b) 5-40 wt. % water-soluble surfactant from reaction of (i) ethylene oxide adducts of polyether diols made by polymerisation of butylene oxide T.H.F. or hexamethylene oxide in presence of acid or alkali, or (ii) adducts of ethylene oxide and propylene oxide on 2-10C diols, polyols and/or bis-(hydroxy cyclohexyl)methane or derivs., with 0.2-1 mol. chlorosulphonic acid, SO3 or sulpho-propionic anhydride per mol OH and subsequent neutralisation, (c) 5-30% usual anionic dispersant, and (d) 40-85% water opt. mixed with a water retention agent, or 10-90% (c) with no (d), and (e) opt. other usual additives. Used for dyeing or brightening of textiles contg. synthetic fibres, esp. wound yarns, e.g. cheeses, of cellulose ester or linear polyester fibres. The dispersions are stable and unchanged after prolonged storage at room temp. or many days at 60 degrees C. They are easily dispersed in water by stirring, and after long heating of dye baths at 110-140 degrees C, no dye flocculation or filtering of dye in outer yarn layers occurs.

Abstract: Stable water-in-oil dispersions of acrylamide (co)polymers are prepd. by polymerising a water-in-oil emulsion of an acrylamide soln., opt. with other water-sol. ethylenically unsatd. monomers, in an organic hydrophobic dispersion medium, in presence of a polymerisation initiator and an emulsifier. The emulsifiers are prepd. by reacting 1 mole of 10-22C (un)satd. fatty alcohols with 0.5-1.5 (1) moles epichlorohydrin, to form glycidyl ethers; 1 mole of the glycidyl ethers is then reacted with 0.5-6 moles of a 2-6C polyalcohol with 2-6 OH gps., or a mono-ether of such an alcohol with a 10-22C fatty alcohol, in presence of an acid or a base. The dispersions are used as flocculants for clarifying aq. systems, in paper mfr., in treating residual water, as dispersants and protective colloids in drilling muds, and as auxiliaries in flood water in sec. petroleum recovery. The dispersions are stable to sedimentation, and can be highly diluted with water.

Abstract: New emulsifier mixt. contains, as co-emulsifier, >=1 monoester of glycerol with a natural 10-24C unsatd. fatty acid, oxyethylated, on av. 6-9 (6.5-8.5) times molecule. Emulsifier is a soya oil- contg. lecithin. Mixt. is partic. useful in nutrition of young animals, e.g. calves and piglets. Monoglyceride oxyethylate, (I), compensates for low emulsifying properties of lecithin. Thus, addn. of 0.2 g glycerol monooleate + 7.5 C2H4O to 1 g lecithin and 20 g fat, gave a mixt. contg. 100 vol. % emulsion after 5, 30 and 60 min. and 99 vol. % emulsion after 24 hrs. No emulsion was obtd. without (I). (I) are liquid.

Abstract: Prepn. of esterified block polymers of ethylene oxide and 1,2-propyleneoxide comprises esterifying block polymers of formula A-B-A (I) (A=a polyethyleneoxide block, B a polypropylene oxide block) in the presence of acid catalysts, with dicarboxylic acid at high temperature. The block copolymers are esterified using 0.5-3 wt.% of (a) >=1 8-12C alkylbenzene sulphonic acid or (b) a 4-10C alkane or alkene carboxylic acid, without intermediate neutralisation. The block copolymers do not need to be neutralised before esterification and no salts are pptd. when the final ester is used to break up oil in water emulsions. The esters can be used to break up oil emulsions from various sources. In an example 1 mol of a block copolymer obtd. by alkaline oxyethylation of 1,2-propyleneoxide, was esterified, without neutralisation, at 150 degrees C with 0.5 mol adipic acid and in the presence of 0.18 Mol % p-n-dodecylbenzene sulphonic acid to give an ester. This is suitable for breaking up oil in H2O emulsions without pptd. of salts.

Use of the new dispersants prevents the occurrence of foaming at both stages of the process.

Abstract: Prepn. of novolaks comprises reaction of an alkyl phenol with acetaldehyde in a mol. ratio of 1:0.3 to 1:1.5 in the presence of an acid catalyst. The alkyl phenol, in the absence of solvent, is mixed with catalyst and acetaldehyde is added continuously or intermittently so that the pressure is not >5 bar, until the desired mol. ratio is reached. The liq. reaction prod. are removed by heat and/or reduced pressure. The customary use of azeotropic distillation for water removal is omitted and no solvent recovery is involved. The procedure is simplified, yield is higher and effluent problems are diminished.

Abstract: Aqs. suspensions of polyolefin short fibres are prepd. using a di- or polyurethane dispersing agent of formula: (where m is 1-5, n is 10-150, X is 1-13C alkylene or arylene; and Y is the rest of a block polyether copolymer contg. at least one block A and one block B where A is of formula -(CH2CH2O)-p and p is 10-150 and B is of formula -(CH2CH2CH2-O)-r and r is 10-150). The dispersing agent causes less foaming or paper making machines and the wet strength of the paper is not badly affected. The block polyether segment Y is pref. of the form A-B-A. B-A-B, A'-B-A-B-A' or B'-A-B-A-B' where A and A' and B and B' may be the same or different. The polyolefin suspension may also contain cellulose fibres.
