Abstract: Alkylphenols are manufactured by reacting phenols with olefins, stripping the reaction mixture by means of an inert gas, cooling the phenol-containing gas mixture and removing the unconverted phenol. Abstract: Regeneration of Cu catalyst used in hydrating acrylonitrile or methacrylonitrile to their amides takes place by washing the inactivated catalyst with deminineralised and O2-free water, esp. condensn. water, at 20-150 (40-90) degrees C. Catalysts contain Cu and an Mg silicate, prepd. by pptg. an Mg cpd. with an alkali silicate in the presence of a Cu cpd. Wash liq. can be rejected without further purificn. and/or recycled to amide prepn. if it contains significant amide or nitrile quantities. Useful life of the Cu catalysts can be prolonged 2-10 times.

Abstract: The prodn. of propylene oxide (I) by the non-catalytic reaction of C3H6 and O2 in the liq. phase is carried out in an automatically recycling tubular reactor in the presence of a solvent. The tubular part of the reactor pref. is upright. The amt. of O2 added should be such that this is consumed between the O2 inlet and the outlet for the prod., the part of the reactor concerned pref. being in the form of bubble column. The prods. are pref. removed at the top of the reactor or cycle and the circulating material passes through a cooler. The process gives a high yield of (I) and few by-prods. and can be controlled easily. In contrast with stirred reactors, this tubular reactor can be scaled-up easily.

Abstract: Polyisocyanates are prepd. by (a) condensing aniline and aq. HCHO in the presence of HCl and distilling the reaction mixt. without neutralisation to separate (and opt. recycle) water and/or unreacted aniline, (b) converting the polyamine-polyamine hydrochloride mixt. entirely to hydrochloride by suspending it in liq. HCl and adding liq. COCl2 to convert the hydrochloride to isocyanate. Pref. the mole ratio aniline:HCl is 15-160:1. Prods. are esp. used for prodn. of wood glues. The process is simple, non-polluting and free from waste.

The carboxamides obtained by the process of the invention are valuable starting materials for the manufacture of solvents, flocculating agents, crosslinking agents, pesticides, plant protectants, textile auxiliaries such as levelling agents, waterproofing agents, foam stabilizers and detergents.
