Abstract: A system and method for automatically delivering an infusate to a patient is disclosed. The system includes an infusion set and an infusion device. A signaling component disposed on an infusion set component identifies an administration protocol for the infusion set. A detection device operatively connected to the infusion device detects the signaling component and identifies the administration protocol. The infusion device is then configured to operate according to the administration protocol.

Abstract: The present invention provides a flowable materials container. The container has a first sidewall and a second sidewall sealed together along a peripheral seam to define a fluid chamber. At least one sidewall is a film having at least one layer of blend of a first component selected from the group of: (1) ethylene and alpha-olefin copolymers having a density of less than about 0.915 g/cc, (2) ethylene copolymerized with lower alkyl acrylates, (3) ethylene copolymerized with lower alkyl substituted alkyl acrylates and (4) ionomers, the first component being present in an amount from about 99% to about 55% by weight of the blend, a second component in an amount by weight of the blend from about 45% to about 1% and consists of one or more polymers of the group: (1) propylene containing polymers, (2) polybutene polymers, (3) polymethylpentene polymers, (4) cyclic olefin containing polymers and (5) bridged polycyclic hydrocarbon containing polymers; and the film has a modulus of elasticity when measured in accordance with ASTM D882 of less than about 60,000 psi, an internal haze when measured in accordance with ASTM D1003 of less than about 25%, an internal adhesion ranking of greater than about 2, a sample creep at 120° C. under 27 psi loading of less than or equal to 150% for a film having a thickness of from about 5 mils to about 15 mils, and the film can be heat sealed into a container having seals wherein the seals remain intact when the container is autoclaved at 121° C. for one hour.

Abstract: A device and method for inactivating pathogens in therapeutic fluids with sterilizing radiation in a continuous thin fluid flow arrangement that exhibits radiation dose uniformity for fluids having high optical densities. Radiation dose uniformity is achieved in part through a "carrying" mechanism that moves or carries the fluid, thereby eliminating a channel flow velocity profile where flow volumes near the channel walls run the risk of overexposure to the radiation due to very large residence times within the channel. The device comprises a relatively flat belt chamber (22) connected to a fluid flow through an inlet (24) and an outlet (26) on the belt chamber (22). The belt chamber (22) has a top surface (28) and a bottom surface (30). A radiation permeable plate (32) is disposed adjacent the top surface (28) of the belt chamber (22) and is in contact with the belt chamber (22). A radiation source (42) is provided adjacent to the plate (32) adjacent to a side opposite the belt chamber (22). A belt (34) having a plurality of flexible vanes (36) is disposed adjacent the bottom surface (30) of the belt chamber (22) such that the vanes (36) make contact with the belt chamber (22). The belt is driven by a roller mechanism (38) in the direction of the fluid flow. As the fluid flows through the belt chamber (22), the flexible vanes (36) provide a squeegee-like mechanism to move the fluid through the belt chamber (22) in discrete packets (40) defined by a pair of vanes (36). As the packets of fluid move through the belt chamber, they are exposed to sterilizing radiation passing through the plate (32).

The film (10) has a first layer (12) of a blend of a first component selected fr om the group of: (1) ethylene and .alpha.-olefin copolymers having a density of less than about 0.915 g/cc, (2) ethylene copolymerized with lower alkyl acrylates, (3) ethylene copolymerized with lower alkyl substituted alkyl acrylates and (4) ionomers, the first component being present in an amount from about 99% to about 55% by weight of the blend, a second component in an amount by weight of the blend from about 45% to about 1% and consists of one or more polymers of the group: (1) propylene containing polymers, (2) polybutene polymers, (3) polymethylpentene polymers, (4) cycli c olefin containing polymers and (5) bridged polycyclic hydrocarbon containing polymers; a second layer (4) attached to the first layer (12); an d the film (10) has a modulus of elasticity when measured in accordance with ASTM D882 of less than about 60,000 psi, an internal haze when measured in accordance with ASTM D1003 of less than about 25%, an internal adhesion ranking of greater than about 2, a sample creep at 120.degree.C under 27 psi loading of less than or equal to 150% for a film having a thickness of from about 5 mils to about 15 mils, and the film (10) can be heat sealed into a container (30) having seals (34) wherein the seals (34) remain intact when the container (30) is autoclaved at 121.degree.C for one hour.
