Abstract: During a write revolution of a storage medium, a transition is written on the storage medium while servoing on another transition previously recorded on the storage medium. During that write revolution, a position error signal corresponding to the position error of the transducer relative to the previously recorded transition is determined. That position error signal is then stored, during the write revolution, to be used in computing a reference track value associated with the transition being written to correct for the position error. Additionally, a product servo-pattern is written, which includes an embodying of the position error therein.

Abstract: A mechanism for servowriting on a storage medium of a storage device. The storage device has a transducer and a servo loop for positioning the transducer with respect to the storage medium. At least one transition is written on a track of the storage medium, while servoing o n other transitions previously recorded on the storage medium. A reference waveform is derived as a functio n of a closed loop response of the servo loop and a position error waveform. The position error waveform corresponds to one or more position errors of the transducer relative to the previously recorded transitions. The reference waveform is usable in writing subsequent tracks on the storage medium. Using the reference waveform for writing subsequent tracks provides a substantial rejection of mechanical disturbance s by the servo loop.

Abstract: A cooling system such as an intra-rack cooling system 500 of a data centre comprises: one or more nodes, such as servers 300, each node having at least one temperature sensor to monitor a temperature of the node components; an air-to-liquid heat exchanger 402 configured to accept a liquid coolant input, preferably via a first shut-off valve 504, to provide cooled air to the one or more nodes; and a temperature sensor to monitor a temperature of air Tai provided by the heat exchanger. The cooling system also comprises a direct liquid cooling apparatus to provide liquid coolant to components of the one or more nodes, preferably an inlet plenum 404, i.e. manifold, and an outlet plenum 406. The apparatus supplies cold input coolant 412, preferably via a second shut-off valve 506, to the one or more nodes and ejects warm coolant 410. A valve, ideally a three-way valve 502, is configured to control a proportion of the coolant flow directed to the heat exchanger and the one or more nodes based upon the monitored temperatures. A flow rate of coolant is also controlled based upon the monitored temperatures, preferably by varying the pump strength of a pump 401.

Abstract: Improvements in placement of timing patterns in self servo writing include correcting for random and systematic errors due to geometric effects. In a disk drive having a recording head with separate read and write elements, a method for determining separation between the elements and for correcting for such errors as a function of skew angle between the head and the disk. Errors resulting from misalignment and non-parallelism of the elements as well as misalignment of the head on it its actuator are also detected and corrected. Errors due to changes in rotational velocity of the disk and misplacement of timing patterns with respect to adjacent timing patterns are detected and corrected. In general, a single revolution process may be used to both write and detect random errors on each track and corrected on subsequent tracks.

Abstract: An integrated data storage disk and disk drive assembly includes a rotatably supported magnetic disk for storing data. A rotor is fixedly joined to the disk for rotating the disk, and includes a plurality of rotor poles. A stator includes a plurality of stator poles positioned around the rotor for sequentially cooperating with respective ones of the rotor poles for rotating the rotor to rotate the disk. The disk and drive may be fabricated using lithographic and electroplating techniques, and a plurality of coaxial disks may be driven by a single disk drive in exemplary embodiments.

Abstract: An improved servowriting system and method whereby errors introduced into the written servo information are reduced or eliminated for greater servowriting accuracy. Accuracy is enhanced by one or more of the following improvements: 1) optimizing write current and write frequency to minimize write width modulation; 2) optimizing the RPM of the storage medium to minimize random mechanical vibration; and 3) providing a clip level check to eliminate the introduction of large errors in product servopattern. The proposed improvements provide substantial rejection of, for example, mechanical and magnetic disturbances, ensuring a robust servowriting process.
