Abstract: In the present invention, the slave base station attains synchronization with the reference base station through messages transmitted from and received by a mobile station either in the soft handoff region between the reference base station and the slave base station or within a range which allows the mobile station to communicate with the slave base station. When the mobile station is not in communication with both the reference base station and the slave base station, then the round trip delay between the mobile station and the reference base station is measured by the reference base station. The reference base station communicates the PN code used by the mobile station over the reverse link to the slave base station. The slave base station acquires the signal from the mobile station and determines when the signal from the mobile station arrives. The slave base station then makes an estimate as to the length of the delay between transmission of a signal from the mobile station to the slave base station. Based upon these measurements and estimates, the slave base station determines the error which is present in the slave base station system time.

Abstract: A method for generating a higher rate channel using a set of N lower rate channels, the method comprises generating a set of N sinusoids having a corresponding set of N phase offsets with predetermined phase rotations; upconverting said set of N lower rate channels using said set of N sinusoids and phase offsets yielding a set of upconverted signals; summing said set of upconverted signals yielding a summed signal whereby the peak-to-average amplitude of said summed signal is reduced based on said phase rotations; and transmitting said summed signal. A corresponding system is also disclosed.

Abstract: A novel and improved method for performing transmit power control is described. A signal is transmitted at a transmit power and includes a traffic channel transmitted at a traffic channel transmit power, and a pilot channel transmitting at a pilot channel transmit power. The receive energy of the pilot channel is measured, and compared with a threshold. A power control command is generated and transmitted to the system generating the signal. This determines whether the command is to be applied to either the traffic channel, the pilot channel, or the entire signal. The power of the determined channel(s) is adjusted accordingly.

Abstract: A method for limiting peak transmit power in a CDMA communication system by transmitting a first communication signal having a first high transmit power region, and transmitting a second communication signal having a second high transmit power region. A first and a second communication signal are time offset to prevent the first and second high transmit power regions from occurring simultaneously. Time shifting only a portion of the first and second communication signals is also taught. The first and second communication signals can also include respective first and second low transmit power regions. The time offset can be selected to align one of the first and second high transmit power regions with one of the first and second low transmit power regions. The total transmit power signal can be determined and the time offset can be selected to minimize a peak level of the total transmit power signal. The communication signals are separated into a plurality of portions and portions of the first and second communication signals are time offset to re-order the sequence of transmission of the plurality of portions.
