Abstract:
The system includes trough-shaped main body having first and second ends, and first and second end plates attached to the main body to form a reaction canister. There is an ignition chamber in gas flow communication with the interior of the canister and a gas generant within the ignition chamber. The reaction canister is adapted to enclose an airbag to be filled with gas from the gas generant upon ignition, and member for igniting the gas generant. The improvement comprises the gas generant comprising an extruded, elongated cylindrical member having an elongated length and a circular cross-section partially subdivided by radial grooves extending along the length of the member. Igniter strips are retained within a member of the radial grooves.
Abstract:
A housing for an airbag module that contains an inflatable airbag cushion in a compacted configuration before being inflated by inflation gas supplied by an inflator device. The housing includes a collar formed of a rigid material for attaching the housing to a vehicle and a chute assembly formed of a flexible material and secured to the collar.

Abstract:
Disclosed are embodiments of methods and apparatus relating to automotive airbags. In one embodiment of the invention, an airbag cushion is provided having four primary panels. A front panel is provided having a substantially rectangular front face. Two substantially triangular side faces are positioned opposite from one another in the inflated airbag cushion, both of which are connected with the front panel. A rear panel including an upper rear face and a lower rear face is also provided. The upper rear face is connected to a first side of both the first and second side faces and the lower rear face is connected to a second side of both the first and second side faces.
Abstract:
An airbag cushion is disclosed for use in automotive protective systems. The airbag cushion includes a tube that may be restricted to prevent gas venting. A cord is coupled to the tube and to a surface of the cushion. Upon airbag deployment, the cord extends until taut or extends until the cushion encounters an obstruction. If pulled taut, the cord tightens the tube and restricts gas venting. If the cushion encounters an obstruction, the cord remains lax and the tube is able to vent gas.
