Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the secondary cross-linking of gels or surfaces of water-absorbing polymers by treating the polymer with a surface secondary cross-linking agent and subsequently subjecting it to a secondary cross-linking reaction during or after the treatment by raising the temperature and drying the polymer. According to the invention, the cross- linking agent is a compound of formula (I), wherein R1 is hydrogen, C1-C4 alkyl, C1-C4 hydroxyalkyl, trialkylsilyl or acetyl and R2, R2', R3, R3', R4, R4' independently is hydrogen, C1-C12 alkyl, C2-C12 alkenyl or C6-C12 aryl, dissolved in an inert solvent. The invention also relates to the liquid- absorbing polymers obtained by said method, to their use in hygiene items, packaging material and nonwovens.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the gel-phase or surface secondary crosslinking of water-absorbent polymers, characterized in that the polymer is treated with a solution for surface secondary cross-linking, during or after treatment undergoes secondary cross-linking by temperature elevation and is then dried. Dissolved in an inert solvent the cross-linking agent contains a compound of formula (I), where R1 and R2 independently of each other are H, hydroxy, phenyl or C1-C6-alkyl, R3 is hydrogen, C1-C12-alkyl, C1-C12-alkenyl or C6-C12-aryl and R4 and R5 independently of each other are C1-C12-alkyl, C1C12-alkenyl, C6-C12-aryl, hydroxy, C1-C12-alkoxy or hydrogen. The invention also relates to water-absorbent polymers obtained according to the above method, and to their use in hygiene articles, packaging materials and nonwoven materials.

Abstract: The invention relates to a method for the surface secondary cross-linking of water-absorbent polymers, according to which the polymer is sprayed with a solution for surface secondary cross-linking. As cross-linking agent said solution contains phosphoric acid esters of the formula (1) or (2), where X is OH or NH2 and R is C1-C12 alkylene, or a mixture of such esters dissolved in an inert solvent. The moist product during or after spraying is subjected to secondary cross-linking and dried by raising the temperature to 50-250 ~C. The invention also relates to water-absorbent polymers obtainable in accordance with the above method and to their use in hygiene articles, packing materials and non-woven materials.

Abstract: The invention relates to non-water soluble hydrogels which can swell in water, and which are coated with steric or electrostatic spacers. Before being coated, the hydrogels comprise the following characteristics: absorbency under load (AUL) (0.7 psi) of at least 20 g/g, and gel strength of at least 1600 Pa. The coated hydrogels preferably have the following characteristics: centrifuge retention capacity (CRC) of at least 24 g/g, saline flow conductivity (SFC) of at least 30 x 10 cm s/g, and free swell rate (FSR) of at least 0.15 g/g s and/or a maximum vortex time of 160 s.
