Also disclosed are the salts commonly used in agriculture of the 4-benzoylisothiazoles of general formula (1), a process for preparing the same and their use as herbicides.

As herbicides, the cpds. are esp. useful for combatting dicotyledonous weeds and are useful as selective herbicides in wheat, rice, maize, soya and cotton. (I) have good herbicidal activity and higher selectivity (better culture plant compatibility) than related known cpds. The cpds. are useful as desiccants/defoliant for defoliation of cotton or desiccating the ground parts of potatoes, sunflowers, soybeans and rape to facilitate mechanical harvesting. They also promote abscission of citrus fruits, olives and other fruits. The cpds. are applied pre- or post-emergence at 0.001-3 (pref. 0.01-1) kg/ha, or to seeds.
