Abstract:
A technique to switch between upper and lowercase alphabetic characters in a wireless communication device measures the period of time in which a numeric key is held in the depressed position by the user. If a numeric key is pressed by the user for a period of time less than a predetermined threshold time (212), the selected alphabetic character is displayed in a default character case. If the selected numeric key is held in the depressed position for a period of time exceeding the predetermined threshold period, the character case is altered and the altered alphabetic character is displayed for the user (214). The user selects the desired alphabetic character by activating a selected numeric key one or more times corresponding to the desired alphabetic letter. If the selected numeric key is held in the depressed position for a period of time exceeding the threshold period during any of the button depressions (212), the system automatically changes to the altered alphabetic character case (214). The alphabetic character case is controlled on a character by character basis such that entry of a new alphabetic character uses the default character case unless the selected numeric key is again held in the depressed position for a period of time exceeding the predetermined threshold.

Systems, methods, and programs for activating a feature (310) on a wireless device (300) are described. In one design, the wireless device (300) receives a request to activate the feature (310) associated with the wireless device (300), wherein the feature activation request is initiated by an application executed on the wireless device (300). A feature (310) includes additional functions and services that add capability to or accessed by the wireless device (300), such as, but not limited to, voice mail, voice recognition, access to GPS, MPEG functions, and access to a data channel or increased data rates. The wireless device (300) executes a component (305) on the wireless device (300), the component (305) having logic operable to configure the wireless device (300) to access the feature (310). The wireless device (300) then activates the feature (310).
Abstract:
A system (10), method, and program for optimizing a wireless network (14) having at least data communication between computer devices (12, 18, 20, 22) selectively connected thereto, and at least one of the computer devices (12, 18, 20, 22) is a remotely located wireless device. The wireless device (12, 18, 20, 22) has a resident network optimization application that causes the selective transmission of network status data to at least one other computer device on the wireless network (14), and either the data-receiving computer device (12, 18, 22, 22) or another computer device (12, 18, 20, 22) on the wireless network (14) optimizes the wireless network (14) based upon the received network status data.

Abstract:
A wireless communication device (100) includes a manual input device (120, 122), a key lock memory (108), and a key lock processor (104). The processor (104) accesses user-programmable parameters stored in the memory (108) that define conditions for automatically disabling and also enabling commands to be issued from the manual input device (120, 122). When the processor (104) determines that the disabling condition has been met, the manual input device (120, 122) is automatically disabled, and will remain disabled until the enabling condition is met. The wireless communication device (100) may further include a timer (130) to measure elapsed time, and a display (124) to show a label indicating the status of the manual input device (120, 122). The manual input device (120, 122) of the wireless communication device (100) may be either, or both, a conventional keypad (120) or a dual-function rotatable switch (122).

Abstract:
A system and method for sharing geographical location information among a set of wireless telecommunication devices, such as mobile telephones. A first wireless telecommunication device generates geographical location information of that wireless telecommunication device, either through a resident device such as a GPS device, or has another computer device on the network provide the geographic location information, and then shares the geographical location information through sending the location information to one or more servers for relay to a predesignated target set of wireless telecommunication devices. The server stores the identity of member devices of the target set and controls communication between the first wireless telecommunications device and the member devices of the target set. A second server can be used to modify the geographical information, such as providing a map showing the location of the first wireless telecommunication device and other member devices of the target set.
