Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain an ultrathin film containing a large amount of particles but having a low content of surface defects by adding a specified slurry of particles inert to a polyester to the reaction system during the period from the time when the esterification is substantially accomplished to the time when the intrinsic viscosity reaches a specified value in the polycondensation step. CONSTITUTION:A process for producing a polyester by transesterifying or esterifying a dicarboxylic acid based on an aromatic dicarboxylic acid or its esterifiable derivative with a glycol and subsequently polycondensing the product, wherein a slurry prepared by dispersing particles inert to the polyester in a prepolymer having a molar ratio of a glycol component to an acid component of 5 or above is add to the reaction system during the period from the time when the transesterification or esterification reaction is substantially accomplished to the time when the intrinsic viscosity of the reaction product reaches 0.2 as the polycondensation reaction proceeds.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a polyester having good dispersibility of inert inorganic particles by adding a specified amount of inert inorganic particles of a specified particle diameter to the reaction system having a specified terminal carboxyl concentration in producing a polyester by a direct process. CONSTITUTION:A process for producing a polyester from a carboxylic acid component based on an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and a glycol component based on an ethylene glycol, wherein 0.01-3wt.% inert inorganic particles of a mean particle diameter of 20-300mmu are added to the reaction system having a terminal carboxyl concentration of the reaction product of 100 equivalents or less per 10 g of the reaction product after the esterification reaction is substantially complete. To decrease the terminal carboxyl concentration of the reaction product below the above value, for example, the reaction product which has substantially completed the esterification reaction in the absence of any catalyst is transferred to a polycondensation kettle, 0.1-1.0mol, per mol of the acid component, ethylene glycol is added to the kettle, and the system is kept at 230-270 deg.C for 10-60min.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To provide a polyester composition which can give a molding, such as a film or a fiber, possessing both easy slidability and abrasion resistance, by adding a specified amount of specified silicone rubber particles to a polyester. CONSTITUTION:Silicone rubber particles of a mean particle diameter of 0.01-5mum, having structural units of the formula (wherein R1, R2 and R3 are each methyl, ethyl or phenyl, and m:n=5:95-80:20) are prepared. In the production of a polyester (e.g., polyethylene terephthalate), the prepared particles are added to the reaction system to produce a polyester containing 0.005-15wt.% silicone rubber particles. The obtained polyester composition is melt-molded into a film, and this film is biaxially oriented and heat-set to produce a biaxially oriented polyester film excellent in lubricity and chipping resistance and suitable for, e.g., a magnetic tape.

About 30-70C octadecyl 3-hydroxydecanoate, docosyl 12-hydroxyoctadecanoate, etc., are used as the above-mentioned ester.
