Abstract: Several embodiments of cylinder head and valve train configurations for an overhead valve internal combustion engine that permits increased valve area without interference and while maintaining simplified valve actuation. In each embodiment one pair of valves is operated by one cam shaft and lies on one side of a plane containing the axis of the cylinder. Three other valves are positioned primarily on the other side of the plane and reciprocate about axes that are not parallel with each other. These axes, however, intersect so that each of these three valves may be operated by the same cam shaft. In one embodiment of the invention the intersection of the valves axis is coincident with the axis of rotation of the respective cam shaft so as to permit direct actuation of the valves. In another embodiment the intersection lies substantially along a plane that intersects the stems of the valves when they are closed to facilitate operation of multiple valves from a single cam lobe by means of a single rocker arm.

Abstract: PURPOSE: To improve further the high speed and output performance of an engine by inclining valve rods of an intake valve and an exhaust valve to a bore axis to make the central height of a piston less than a specified dimension.
CONSTITUTION: An ignition plug 8 is disposed approximately in the center of a combustion chamber 7. At least three intake valves 10 and at least two exhaust valves 11 are provided per one cylinder. Valve rods 10a of the intake valves 10 are inclined to a bore axis C by angles α

2 . Also, a valve rod 11a of the exhaust valve 11 is inclined to the bore axis C by angle β. The height of the central upper surface portion of a piston 6 is made equal or less to that of a plane interconnecting the upper surfaces of both peripheral shoulders. Thus, the high speed and output performance of an engine can be further improved by low stroke/bore ratio and high compression ratio without reducing the efficiency of combustion.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To improve the discharge of the combusted gas into an exhaust passage by installing a member for restricting the intake stream in the early stage in opening an intake valve, in the captioned apparatus equipped with a plurality of intake valves per cylinder. CONSTITUTION:A plurality of intake valves 2 are installed for one cylinder, and a flow-rate restricting means 15 for restricting the intake flow in the early stage of opening the intake valve is installed for one or several intake valves. Said flow-rate control means 15 is formed of a peripheral wall 16 which is installed in close to the outer periphery of the intake valve 2 from the downstream edge of a valve seat, and a limited gap is formed between the peripheral wall 16 and the outer periphery of the intake valve 2. The action of the intake negative pressure which affects into a combustion chamber is reduced in the early stage of opening the valve, and the combusted gas is discharged into an exhaust passage without generating backward flow into the intake passage. When overlap is completed, a large amount of intake air is introduced into the combustion chamber in a short time, since the area of an intake port is large.

CONSTITUTION: There intake valves and two exhaust valves are provided per cylinder, the intake valves are driven by an intake valve cam 11a, and the exhaust valves are driven by an exhaust valve cam 12a. Two exhaust valves and the intake valves on both sides are directly driven by the cams 12a, 11a via lifters 19, 15, while the central intake valve is driven by the cam 11a via a rocker arm 16. Although three intake valves are provided, the lifter 15 can be made large in diameter, the lift quantity of the intake valves can be increased, and the performance of an engine can be improved.
