Abstract: Gas chromatographs of the invention generally comprise four or more analysis channels. Specifically, four or more gas chromatography columns are configured for parallel analysis of four or more gaseous samples with detection being effected using a microdetector array comprising four or more microdetectors. In one embodiment, the four or more microdetectors 510 are microfabricated detectors, and are integrally formed with a substrate or with one or more microchip bodies mounted on a substrate. In a preferred embodiment, a microdetector array comprises four or more thermal conductivity detectors having one or more thin-film detection filaments. A preferred heated environment for highly parallel gas chromatographs is also disclosed.

Abstract: A method and apparatus (10) for reacting a plurality of different mixtures in parallel in a semi-batch or continuous mode is provided. Each reaction is contained within a reactor vessel (102), the reactor vessels (102) combined into a reactor block (100). Reactant(s) to be added during the reaction are kept in a header barrel (202), which has a plunger (402) to feed reactant(s) from the header barrel (202) through a transfer line (302) into the reactor vessel (102). The plunger (402) is moved using a drive system (500). The header barrels (202) are optionally combined in a header block (200). The header block (200) is seated to a plate (300) containing the transfer lines (302), which in turn is sealed to the reactor block (100). A latch mechanism (600) is provided for easy sealing of the reactor (100) and header blocks (200) to the plate (300). The entire apparatus (10) may be placed on a rocker or rotating plate for mixture as the reaction is proceeding.

Abstract: Combinatorial synthesis is done by using a substrate having an array of diverse materials thereon prepared by delivering components to predefined regions on a substrate and simultaneously reacting the components to form at least two materials. Materials that can be prepared using these methods are covalent network solids, ionic solids and molecular solids. Examples are inorganic, organometallic, intermetallic, ceramic, organic polymeric and composite materials. Once prepared, these materials can be screened for useful properties. Abstract: An apparatus and method for carrying out and monitoring the progress and properties of multiple reactions is disclosed. The method and apparatus are especially useful for synthesizing, screening, and characterizing combinatorial libraries, but also offer significant advantages over conventional experimental reactors as well. The apparatus generally includes multiple vessels for containing reaction mixtures, and systems for controlling the stirring rate and temperature of individual reaction mixtures or groups of reaction mixtures. In addition, the apparatus may include provisions for independently controlling pressure in each vessel, and a system for injecting liquids into the vessels at a pressure different than ambient pressure. In situ monitoring of individual reaction mixtures provides feedback for process controllers, and also provides data for determining reaction rates, product yields, and various properties of the reaction products, including viscosity and molecular weight.

Abstract: A method and catalysts and fuel processing apparatus for producing a hydroge n- rich gas, such as a hydrogen-rich syngas are disclosed. According to the method, a CO-containing gas, such as a syngas, contacts a platinum-free ruthenium-cobalt water gas shift ("WGS") catalyst, in the presence of water and preferably at a temperature of less than about 450~C, to produce a hydrogen-rich gas, such as a hydrogen-rich syngas. Also disclosed is a platinum-free ruthenium-cobalt water gas shift catalyst formulated from: a) Ru, its oxides or mixtures thereof; b) Co, Mo, their oxides or mixtures thereof; and c) at least one of Li, Na, K, Rb, Cs, Ti, Zr, Cr, Fe, La, Ce, E u, their oxides and mixtures thereof. The WGS catalyst may be supported on a carrier, such as any one member or a combination of alumina, zirconia, titania, ceria, magnesia, lanthania, niobia, zeolite, perovskite, silica cla y, yttria and iron oxide. Fuel processors containing such water gas shift catalysts are also disclosed.
