Abstract:
This invention is directed to an environmentally safe, water soluble stripping composition comprising between about 30 and about 98.5 wt. % N-methylpyrrolidone or a 10/90 to 90/10 mixture of N-methylpyrrolidone and gamma-butyrolactone and between about 0.1 and about 5 wt. % cyclomethicone. The invention also concerns the use of this composition in a process for stripping organic coatings such as paints, resins, varnishes and shellac from substrates.
Abstract:
Various liquid or low melting pesticide and herbicide formulations, previously formulated with organic solvents, are combined with a polymer in solution and co-precipitated to form a polymer complex which captures the pesticide or herbicide yet exists as a solid at ambient conditions. By preparing the pesticide or herbicide formulation as a solid complex, storage and handling of the formulation is possible without the potential for organic solvent emission. When the solid polymer complex is placed in water, a stable aqueous dispersion of the pesticide or herbicide is achieved as the polymer inhibits flocculation, with approximately 100 % recovery of the pesticide or herbicide. The figure is the graph showing recovery of an active ingredient after dispersion in a standing sample.
Abstract:
Strongly swellable, moderately crosslinked polyvinylpyrrolidone polymer in the form of fine white powders having a defined aqueous gel volume and Brookfield viscosity which is prepared by precipitation polymerization in the presence of a prescribed amount of a crosslinking agent, and an effective amount of a pharmaceutical medicament, or hydrogen peroxide or iodine in the form of a complex, is described herein.
Abstract:
A catalyst and method for producing N-substituted pyrrolidones utilizes a copper-palladium catalyst disposed on a support and mixed with a desired alcohol and 2-pyrrolidone. A reaction is undertaken under a hydrogen atmosphere, preferably at 50 to 1000 psig, and at a temperature ranging up to 400 DEG C. Utilizing a copper-palladium catalyst provides superior results in selectivity and yield over previous catalysts.
Abstract:
A solution of stearamidopropyl dimethyl pyrrolidonyl methyl ammonium chloride in a polyhydric alcohol at a concentration of about 1-30 % by weight in glycerol.
Abstract:
A pharmaceutical tablet is provided herein having an effective dissolution rate. The tablet contains a pharmaceutically-active ingredient and a substantially linear, i.e. non-crosslinked K-30 to K-120 PVP, preferably above 116, as a binding agent. The PVP used herein preferably is made by a polymerization process in which the vinyl pyrrolidone monomer is polymerized in the presence of an initiator which produces a linear PVP polymerization, and a residual initiator level of less than 500 ppm.
Abstract:
An antimicrobial, low toxicity, non-irritating composition comprises a blend of several bis-quaternary ammonium compounds optionally coprecipitated (1) with a copolymer of vinylpyrrolidone and an acrylamido or vinyl quaternary ammonium monomer, or (2) polyvinylpyrrolidone.
Abstract:
A method is provided for treating blood and its compositions to remove pathogenic microorganisms present therein. The invention comprises contacting cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine (PVP-I2) with blood and separating the cross-linked PVP-iodine and the cells therein from the soluble portion of the blood. The preferred method involves loading cross-linked polyvinylpyrrolidone-iodine onto a filter having a porosity less than either the particle size of the cross-linked PVP-iodine or the blood cells in the composition, contacting the thus-loaded filter bed with the blood thereby to inactivate the microorganisms therein, passing the treated soluble portion of the blood composition through said filter, collecting the thus-treated blood cells remaining on the filter, and purifying the treated soluble portion of the blood composition by contacting it with cross-linked PVP to remove any residual iodine therein.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to hair fixatives: (1) a terpolymer hair fixative comprising vinyl caprolactam, vinyl pyrrolidone and methacryloamidopropyl trimethylammonium chloride; or (2) vinyl caprolactam, vinyl pyrrolidone, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate and acrylic acid; (3) vinyl caprolactam, vinyl pyrrolidone and vinyl acetate; and (4) a process of making a monomer mixture of maleic anhydride, vinyl acetate and isobornyl acrylate or methacrylate.
Abstract:
What is provided herein is an electrically conductive gel composition for use in establishing a low resistance contact between an electrode and a biological body, comprising a clear, aqueous solution of about 0.1 to 3 % by weight of a crosslinked, neutralized copolymer of maleic anhydride and a C1-C5 alkyl vinyl ether. In the preferred form of the invention, the composition contains about 0.1 to 3 % by weight of the crosslinked, neutralized copolymer which contains about 1 to 5 mole % based on the alkyl vinyl ether of a crosslinking agent.
