Abstract: The invention provides a novel methodology that increases the performance of wireless communication systems by efficiently managing the assignment of burst transmissions. The invention provides a mechanism for premature termination of burst transmissions, depending on a set of intelligent criteria. The invention checks for power overload conditions and excessive frame error rates (FER) in determining a premature burst termination. Also checked is a known time period which no burst shall exceed in transferring data. The invention advantageously increases the system throughput and data rates and maximizes power capacity in the data channels. In particular, transmission quality is maintained, as power overloading and excessive interference problems are circumvented. Systems resources are efficiently conserved and better utilized as a result.

Abstract: A method is provided for the establishment of a transmission protocol proxy means at an intermediate point in a communications link between the mobile user and the data node. That transmission protocol proxy means operates to intercept data packets from the data source, which may be the data node or the mobile user, buffer those packets prior to forwarding on to the intended data sink, and return an acknowledgment to the data source indicating receipt of the data packets, according to the operative transmission protocol.

Abstract: The invention provides a power control methodology that increases the performance and the throughput of wireless communication systems. In particular, the invention provides a reverse jamming prevention process that efficiently utilizes power resources in a communication system such as CDMA. The invention advantageously prevents reverse jamming due to link imbalance that results from differences in forward and reverse link coverage. According to the invention, an evaluation set (e-set), which is a super set of the active set of base transceiver stations serving specific users, is determined to prevent the negative effects of reverse jamming. Excessive interference problems in the reverse link, particularly in high-speed wireless systems, are thus avoided.

Abstract: The present invention is a method for performing handoffs in wireless communications systems having extended range concentric cell base station, wherein the concentric cell base station has a micro cell and a macro cell that incorporates multiple timing protocols to extend the base station's access range. In one embodiment, the base station determines whether a handoff is to be performed using absolute path delay information, which will indicate the current and previous positions of a mobile-telephone. If the absolute path delay information indicates that the mobile-telephone is moving between the macro cell and the micro cell, or to a cell associated with another base station, the current base station will instruct the mobile-telephone to perform a handoff to the frequency band associated with the micro cell, macro cell or base station to which the mobile-telephone is traveling towards.

Abstract: The present invention is a method for extending a cell radius or access range of a base station without incurring ASIC correlator re-design. This is accomplished using a modified timing protocol that will cause signals transmitted by mobile-telephones positioned beyond the limitations of the ASIC correlator bit limitation to be received within a search window so the signals may be detected and demodulated. In one embodiment, the modified timing protocol incorporates a timing advance technique in which the base station transmits its signals at an advanced time before frame boundaries such that signals transmitted by out-of-range mobile-telephones can be received within a search window beginning at a frame boundary and spanning a time interval corresponding to the ASIC correlator bit limitation. In another embodiment, the modified timing protocol incorporates a shifted search window that begins at an advanced time after a frame boundary and spans a time interval corresponding to the ASIC correlator bit limitation.
