Abstract: In a composite element comprising layers of (i) polyisocyanate poly-addition product (PU), (ii) optionally at least one plastic, (iii) a gas permeation barrier and (iv) at least one thermoplastic, layers (iii) and (iv) are bonded together by melting a layer (iiia) between them. Independent claims are also included for: (a) sandwich elements with the following layers: (iv) 1-25 mm thermoplastic, (iii) 0.1-200 micro m metal foil coated on the opposite side from (i) and (ii) with 20-500 micro m thermoplastic (iiia) which is melted to bond (iii) with (iv), (ii) optionally 5-1000 micro m plastic, (i) 0.5-80 cm PU and then layers (ii), (iii) and (iv) as above; (b) tubes with the following layers: (iv) as above and/or metal as inner tube, (i), (ii), (iii) as above and (iv) (above) as an outer tube; (c) tubes with the following layers: (iv) plastic as above and/or metal as inner tube, (iii), (ii), (i), (ii), (iii) as above and (iv) plastic (above) as an outer tube; (d) the production of composite elements by reacting isocyanates with NCO-reactive compounds in the presence of blowing agents and optionally catalysts and other additives etc. in a reaction space bounded by layers (ii) (optional), (iii) gas barrier material, (iiia) 20-500 micro m thermoplastic and (iv) 1-25 mm thermoplastic(s), so that layer (iiia) is melted by the heat of reaction and binds layers (iii) and (iv) together after cooling; and (e) composite elements obtained by (d).

Abstract: A foam (I) comprises at least 70 wt.% of carbon with an average cell size of over 20 microns, a porosity of 35-99.5% , over 90% open cells, an internal surface area of over 50 m2/g with cell crosspieces that have a triangular cross-section with inwardly curved sides and pores in the cell framework material of 0.2-50 nm in size and a volume of 0.01-0.8 cm3/g. Independent claims are included for: (1) a powder material (II) prepared by comminution of the foam (I) and; (2) a process for the production of the foam (I) by pyrolysis of a polymer foam, comprising at least 30 wt.% of a polymer material having a nitrogen content of greater than 6 wt.%, porosity of 35-99.5%, open cell content of less than 1% and inorganic materials processed into the foam or applied onto the surface whereby during and/or after pyrolysis the foam treated with water vapor, carbon dioxide and/or oxygen at over 400 degreesC.

(a) is used in an amount of 0.2-80 wt.% and has a functionality of more than 1.5, and an OH number of 10-100 mg KOH/g. (c) consists of 3-10 C hydrocarbons. Independent claims are also included for: (1) the production of the hard foams described; (2) the foams, and (3) the use of the polyether alcohols described.

Abstract: Emulsions containing polyether alcohols and polyester alcohols are used in the production of hard foams based on isocyanates to improve the temperature stability of the foams. The compounds (I) comprise 1-99 wt.% of a polyether alcohol with a functionality of \- 1 and a hydroxyl number of 10-500 mg KOH/g. The reaction is performed in the presence of 0.1-25 wt.% of a carboxylic anhydride.

Abstract: Prepolymers which contain isocyanate groups, have an NCO content of at least 30.0% by weight and can be prepared by reacting an isocyanate mixture consisting predominantly of diphenylmethane diisocyanates and polyphenylpolymethylene polyisocyanates and having a proportion of two-ring isomers of not more than 74% by weight with at least 4-functional polyols or a mixture of polyols having a mean functionality of at least 4, where the polyols or polyol mixtures have a hydroxyl number of from 200 to 1650 mg KOH/g and a number average molecular weight of less than 1100 g/mol. The present invention also provides a process for preparing these prepolymers containing isocyanate groups, provides for their use for producing polyurethanes and provides a process for producing polyurethanes by reacting at least one novel prepolymer containing isocyanate groups, if desired in admixture with further organic and/or modified organic isocyanates (a), with compounds having at least two reactive hydrogen atoms (b) in the presence of, if desired, blowing agents (c), catalysts (d) and, if desired, further auxiliaries and/or additives (e).
