Abstract:
A doped silica-titania ("DST") glass article that includes a glass article having a glass composition comprising a silica-titania base glass containing titania at 7 to 14 wt.% and a balance of silica, and a dopant selected from the group consisting of (a) F at 0.7 to 1.5 wt.%, (b) B 2 O 3 at 1.5 to 5 wt.%, (c) OH at 1000 to 3000 ppm, and (d) B 2 O 3 at 0.5 to 2.5wt.% and OH at 100 to 1400 ppm. The glass article has an expansivity slope of less than about 1.3 ppb/K 2 at 20°C. For DST glass articles doped with F or B 2 O 3 , the OH level can be held to less than 10 ppm, or less than 100 ppm, respectively. In many aspects, the DST glass articles are substantially free of titania in crystalline form.

Abstract:
The present disclosure is directed to a method of making an optical fiber with improved bend performance, the optical fiber having a core and at least one cladding layer, and a chlorine content in the in the last layer of the at least one cladding layer that is greater than 500 ppm by weight. The fiber is prepared using a mixture of a carrier gas, a gaseous chlorine source material and a gaseous reducing agent during the sintering of the last or outermost layer of the at least one cladding layer. The inclusion of the reducing gas into a mixture of the carrier gas and gaseous chlorine material reduces oxygen-rich defects that results in at least a 20% reduction in TTP during hydrogen aging testing.
Abstract:
The invention relates to an optical fibre for the filtered collection of light, in particular Raman scattered light produced by monochromatically excited light sources, and a method for the production thereof. The problem of providing such a fibre that overcomes the disadvantages of the prior art and that has as small an outer diameter ( 1 m and preferably bending radii of less than 5 mm is solved by providing, for each cross-sectional surface of 7853 mum2, at least 19 individual single mode fibre cores with a refractive index (n1) and with a core diameter d, which are embedded in a homogenous medium of the same refractive index (n2), the reciprocal core pitch (Pitch Lambda) of said fibres relative to one another is on the order of Lambda = 2 s d and is defined according to the relation (F) corresponding to the predetermined excitation wavelength (lambda), and by inscribing a fibre bragg grating (FBG) into all single mode fibres after extraction jointly and laterally in an identical position in each single mode fibre core.
Abstract:
An optical surgical fiber assembly for delivering laser radiation from a laser radiation source to a treatment site has a sealed off capillary enclosing a delivery end of the fiber. The capillary is formed from an outermost layer of fused silica and an adjacent layer of boron-doped fused silica having a higher CTE than that of the fused silica. The capillary is shrink-fitted onto the delivery end of the fiber. A compressive stress is imparted to the outermost layer of the capillary as a result of the shrink-fitting process and the CTE difference between the layers. This provides mechanical hardening of the surface of the outermost layer.
