Abstract: Water-soluble copolymers containing copolymerized vinylamine units are prepared by copolymerizing (a) from 95 to 10 mol % of N-vinylformamide and (b) from 5 to 90 mol % of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer from the group consisting of vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, C1-C4-alkyl vinyl ethers, the esters, nitriles and amides of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid and N-vinylpyrrolidone, and then eliminating from 30 to 100 mol % of the formyl groups from the copolymer. Preferred copolymers are copolymers of N-vinylformamide and vinyl acetate, in which from 30 to 100 mol % of the monomer units are hydrolyzed. The copolymers are used in papermaking to increase the dry strength and wet strength of the paper.

Abstract: The invention relates to a homogeneous mixture in the form of a powder or granules as additive for powdered detergent and cleaner compositions, consisting of a) 20 to 80% by weight of one or more polycarboxylic acids from the group of poly(meth)acrylic acids, poly- alpha -chloroacrylic acids and their hydrolysis products, of copolymers of (meth)acrylic acid and itaconic acid, of copolymers of acrylic acid and methacrylic acid, of copolymers of maleic acid and alkyl vinyl ether or vinyl esters, of copolymers of (meth)acrylic acid and vinyllactic acid and of copolymers of maleic acid and ethylenically unsaturated hydrocarbons, where appropriate in the form of their water-soluble salts, b) 20 to 80% by weight of nitrilotriacetic acid or its mono-, di- or trisodium salt and c) 0 to 20% by weight of one or more additives conventional for detergent and cleaner compositions and to the use of this mixture as powdered additive for solid detergent and cleaner compositions and to their production.

Abstract: Pulverulent and/or granular additives for pulverulent detergents and cleaning agents, consisting of (a) from 80 to 20% by weight of one or more copolymers comprising from 40 to 90% by weight of (meth)acrylic acid and from 60 to 10% by weight of maleic acid and/or one or more copolymers comprising from 10 to 45% by weight of (meth)acrylic acid, from 10 to 45% by weight of maleic acid and from 10 to 60% by weight of one or more hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylates where hydroxyalkyl is of 2 to 6 carbon atoms, if appropriate in the form of a partially or completely neutralized water-soluble salt, (b) from 20 to 80% by weight of nitrilotriacetic acid or its mono-, di- or trisodium or mono-, di- or tripotassium salt and (c) from 0 to 20% by weight of one or more additives conventionally used for detergent and cleaning agent formulations, the use of these pulverulent and/or granular mixtures as additives for pulverulent and/or granular detergents and cleaning agents, and processes for the preparation of the said additives.

Abstract: A process for the manufacture of paper having a high dry strength and a low wet strength, by treating the surface of the paper with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal and/or alkaline earth metal salt of a polymer of (a) from 91 to 100% by weight of acrylic acid and/or methacrylic acid and (b) from 0 to 9% by weight of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylamide, methacrylamide, vinyl acetate, maleic anhydride, diisobutylene, an ester of acrylic acid and/or an ester of methacrylic acid, which has a viscosity of from 5 to 100 mPas in 2% strength aqueous solution at 20 DEG C., and drying the impregnated paper. The polymer is generally employed in an amount of from 1 to 4% by weight, based on dry paper, and increases the dry strength of the paper without substantially increasing the wet strength.

Abstract: Textile goods containing synthetic fibers are washed and after-treated by a process wherein, as an antiredeposition agent, a copolymer is employed which contains, as copolymerized monomers, a) from 50 to 90% by weight of one or more vinyl esters of C1-C4 aliphatic carboxylic acids, b) from 5 to 35% by weight of one or more N-vinyllactams, c) from 1 to 20% by weight of one or more monomers containing basic groups, or of salts or quaternization products of these monomers, and d) from 0 to 20% by weight of one or more further monomers which are copolymerizable with monomers a), b) and c) and are free from carboxyl and basic groups, the percentages in each case being based on the sum of the monomers, with the proviso that the percentages sum to 100.
