    Abstract: Polymers used in sizing paper (see Division D2) are derived from imidazole derivatives having an ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable group on the ring nitrogen (monomer I), with or without one or more of the following comonomers: up to 95% by weight of one or more polymerizable unsaturated compounds containing in the molecule a carbonamido group with one or two substituents on the nitrogen atom (monomer II); up to 50% by weight of one or more further water-soluble monomers (monomer III); and up to 30% by weight of one or more water-insoluble monomers (monomer IV). Polymers referred to in the examples are: homopolymers of N-vinylimidazole (Examples 1-7, 9 and 10); binary copolymers of N-vinyl-imidazole with N-vinylcaprolactam (Examples 11(b) and (c), 12(a) and (b) and 14(b)), or N-vinyl-pyrrolidone (Example 13(e)), or acrylonitrile (Examples 13(a) and (c)), or acrylic acid (Example 13(b)), or ethyl acrylate (Example 16(a)); ternary copolymers of N-vinylimidazole with N-vinylpyrrolidone and N-vinylcaprolactam (Example 14(a)), or N-vinyl-pyrrolidone and acrylonitrile (Examples 11(a) and 13(d)), or dimethylacrylamide and acrylonitrile (Example 15), or N-vinylcaprolactam and vinyl acetate (Example 17); a ternary copolymer of butyl acrylate, acrylonitrile and vinylimidazole quaternized with dimethyl sulphate (Example 8); and a quaternary copolymer of N-vinylimidazole, N-vinylcaprolactam, N-vinylpyrrolidone and ethyl acrylate (Example 16 (b)). Specification 897,804 is referred to.ALSO:Paper is stock-sized or surface-sized with a water-soluble homopolymer or copolymer derived from one or more compounds of the type of imidazole having an ethylenically unsaturated polymerizable group on the ring nitrogen (monomer I). The copolymer may contain up to 95% by weight of one or more polymerizable unsaturated compounds containing in the molecule a carbonamido group with one or two substituents on the nitrogen atom (monomer II), or up to 50% by weight of one or more further water-soluble monomers (monomer III), or up to 30% by weight of one or more water-insoluble monomers (monomer IV). The Specification includes lists of suitable monomers. The paper may also be sized with rosin and alum, and may contain fillers, e.g. china clay. Specification 897,804 is referred to.

    Abstract: The invention relates to s-triazine radical-containing polyether polyol mixtures having functionalities of from 2 to 6 and hydroxyl numbers of from 210 to 640, prepared by the oxyalkylation of a mixture of one or more polyamino-1,3,5-triazines, preferably melamine, and an alkanol having a hydroxyl functionality of from 2 to 6 and having 2 to 18 carbon atoms, water, or their mixtures, in the absence of catalysts and conventional inert polar solvents. The resulting polyether polyol mixtures are suitable for the preparation of rigid polyurethane, polyisocyanurate, and urethane group-containing polyisocyanuate foams produced by means of the polyisocyanate polyaddition process.

A process for preparing an elastic, compact or cellular polyurethane by reacting a) an organic polyisocyanate with b) an organic polyhydroxy compound in the presence of c) a catalyst and optionally d) a chain extending or crosslinking agent, e) a blowing agent, f) an assistand and/or an additive, wherein polyhydroxy compound b) comprises to an extent not less than 30% by weight, based on total component b), a di-, tri- or tetrafunctional polyether polyester polyol having a hydroxyl number of from 10 to 200 and having been prepared by esterification of i) a di-, tri- or tetrafunctional polyetherol having a hydroxyl number of from 15 to 250 with a carboxylic anhydride in the presence of N-methylimidazole and/or triethylenediamine as a catalyst to give a carboxylic monoester and subsequent ii) alkoxylation of the carboxylic monoester with an alkylene oxide in the presence of a mixture of N-methylimidazole and/or triethylenediamine and triphenylphosphine and/or a thiodialkylene glycol as a catalyst, the amount of catalyst being from 0.05 to 2.0 parts by weight, based on 100 parts by weight of the mixture of polyol and carboxylic anhydride or on 100 parts by weight of carboxylic monoester.

    Abstract: The invention relates to storage-stable tris(hydroxyalkyl)isocyanurate polyol dispersions containing (a) from 2 to 70 parts by weight tris(hydroxyalkyl)isocyanurate, (b) from 98 to 30 parts by weight of at least one polyol having a functionality of from 2 to 8 and a hydroxyl number from 20 to 1800, and (c) from 0 to 20 parts by weight of one or more dispersion stabilizers. The dispersions are prepared by dissolving starting components A and B at temperatures in excess of 100 DEG C., in some cases adding a dispersion stabilizer and/or crystallization accelerator, with continuous and step-wise cooling of the mixture while stirring. The products are utilized for the preparation of polyurethane plastics, in particular polyisocyanurate foams containing polyurethane or polyurethane groups.
