Date May 15, 1997A process for the preparation of polyalcohols comprises the stages: (a) Reaction of an alkanal or ketone with formaldehyde in aqueous solution in the presence of a tertiary amine, to form a formates containing polyalcohol product mixture, (b) removal of water, excess tertiary amine, excess formaldehyde (c) heating of remaining mixture from (b) with removal of further formaldehyde and tertiary amine with formation of the formates of the polyalcohol, (d) transfer of tertiary amine removed from stage (b) and/or from stage (c), to synthesis stage (a) and/or to the subsequent transesterification stage (e), (e) transesterification of the resulting formates of the polyalcohol from stage (c) with an alcohol of the formula ROH in the presence of a transesterification catalyst to give polyalcohols and formates of the formula where R is a hydrocarbon radical, preferably alkyl of 1-6, particularly preferably 1-2, carbon atoms, and (f) isolation of the polyalcohols.

    Abstract: High purity aqueous hydrogen peroxide solutions, used for electronic substrate treatment and having an extremely low total organic carbon content, are new. High purity aqueous hydrogen peroxide solutions, used for treating substrates of electronic components, have a total organic carbon content of \}100 ppb. Independent claims are also included for the following: (i) production of high purity aqueous hydrogen peroxide solutions by one of the following methods performed in water and in the absence of organic compounds and their source materials: catalytic reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, electrochemical reduction of oxygen or electrolysis of acidic ammonium sulfate solutions; and (ii) high purity aqueous hydrogen peroxide solutions produced by the above process.

    Abstract: Formaldehyde is removed by distillation from reaction solutions containing a methlolated alkanal which was obtained from the reaction of formaldehyde with an alkanal which has at least one acidic hydrogen atom alpha to the carbonyl function or from the reaction of a 2-alkylacrolein or acrolein with water and formaldehyde, by a process in which this reaction was carried out in the presence of catalytic amounts of organic amine. The process permits the improved removal of formaldehyde from the reaction mixture and furthermore facilitates the hydrogenation of the alkanals thus obtained to give polyols.
