Abstract: Provided are a membrane electrode assembly having an ununiform composition for a fuel cell which is improved in performance and lifetime and is lowered in manufacturing cost, and a polymer electrolyte fuel cell containing the membrane electrode assembly. The membrane electrode assembly is such that the total region of an electrode catalyst layer is divided into a plurality of regions from a gas injection hole to a gas discharge hole, and the catalyst coating amount per unit area increases gradually along the divided regions(1,2,3) from the gas injection hole part to the discharge hole part. Preferably the catalyst is platinum or a platinum-ruthenium alloy.
