A process for the purification of acrylic acid or methacrylic acid by crystallization and distillation comprises: (A) crystallization of an acrylic or methacrylic acid containing mixture by formation of an acrylic acid or methacrylic acid enriched product crystallizate and a mother liquor; (B) distillation of at least a portion of the mother liquor to form a distillation residue that is at least partially drawn off and a head product; (C) crystallization of at least a portion of the head product to form a crystallization residue that is drawn off and a crystallizate; and (D) recycling of the crystallizate from step (C) to step (A).
