    Abstract: Carbodiimides based on 1,3-bis-(1-methyl-1-isocyanato-ethyl)-benzene (BMIEB), which contain urea structures and sulfonic acid and/or sulfonate groups. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a process for the production of carbodiimides by the reaction of BMIEB in presence of catalysts with cleavage of carbon dioxide, followed by reaction of the isocyanate group-containing carbodiimide with aminosulfonic acid(s) and/or aminosulfonate(s); (b) carbodiimides obtained by this process; (c) mixtures of these carbodiimides with compounds containing ester units or with polyurethanes containing ester groups, polycondensation products such as thermoplastic polyesters (e.g. polyethylene and polybutylene terephthalate), polyether-esters, polyester-esters, polyester-amides, polycaprolactones, unsaturated polyester resins, polyoxymethylene homo- and co-polymers or polyamides; (d) a process for the production of polyurethane (PU) elastomers by reacting isocyanates with isocyanate-reactive compounds, blowing agents and optionally catalysts and additives etc., in presence of these carbodiimides; and (e) PU elastomers obtained by process (d).
