Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new carbodiimide composed of a specific carbodiimide and useful as a stabilizer for the hydrolytic decomposition of a plastic composed mainly of a polyester. SOLUTION: The objective carbodiimide is based on 1,3-bis(1-methyl-1- isocyanatoethyl)benzene and contains 12-40 wt.% of ethylene oxide unit [CH2 - CH2 - O] based on the carbodiimide and the structural unit of formula I, e.g. a compound of formula II [R is NHCONHR1 or NHCOOR1 (R1 is a group derived from an isocyanate-reactive compound); (n) is 0-10]. The carbodiimide can be produced by reacting 1,3-bis(1-methyl-1-isocyanatoethyl)benzene in the presence of a catalyst to eliminate carbon dioxide and form a carbodiimide and reacting the carbodiimide with a compound reactive with isocyanate and having the ethylene oxide unit.

Abstract: A process is disclosed for preparing microcellular polyurethane elastomers by reacting: (a) high-molecular polyhydroxyl compounds, optionally (b) low-molecular chain-lengthening and/or cross-linking agents with (c) 3,3'-dimethoxy-4,4'-diisocyanato-diphenyl and/or 4,4'-stilbene-diisocyanate in the presence or absence of (d) catalysts; (e) foaming agents; and (f) additives. Also disclosed are isocyanate prepolymers suitable for preparing these elastomers.

Abstract: Carbodi-imides (I) based on 1,3-bis-(1-methyl-1-isocyanato-ethyl)-benzene (BMIEB), containing 12-40 wt% ethylene oxide (EO) units. Independent claims are also included for: (a) a process for the production of (I) by reaction of BMIEB in presence of catalysts with cleavage of carbon dioxide, followed by reaction of the isocyanate groups with a suitable reactive compound (i) which also contains EO units; (b) another process for the production of (I) by reaction of BMIEB with compound(s) containing EO units, so that the ratio of NCO groups to NCO-reactive groups is at least 2:1, followed by catalytic cleavage of CO2; (c) carbodi-imides (I) obtained by these processes; (d) mixtures of (I) with compounds containing ester units or with polyurethanes containing ester groups, polycondensation products such as thermoplastic polyesters (e.g. polyethylene and polybutylene terephthalate), polyether-esters, polyester-esters, polyester-amides, polycaprolactones, unsaturated polyester resins or polyamides; (e) a process for the production of polyurethanes by reacting isocyanates with isocyanate-reactive compounds, blowing agents and optionally catalysts and additives etc. in presence of (I); (f) polyurethanes obtained by process (d).

Abstract: Production of microcellular polyurethane elastomers is claimed by reacting (A) high mol. polyhydroxy compounds and optionally (B) low. mol. chain extenders and/or crosslinkers with (C) 3,3'-dimethoxy-4,4'- diisocyanato-diphenyl in presence or absence of (D) catalysts, foaming agents etc.. Preferably the polyhydroxy component (A) is of functionality 2-3 and mol. wt. 500-6,000 and is especially a difunctional polyester polyol, OH-containing polycarbonate or polyoxybutylene glycol of mol. wt. 800-3,500 while the chain extender is an alkane diol, dialkylene glycol or polyoxyalkylene glycol of mol. wt. up to 800 and the crosslinker is also of mol. wt. up to 800 and is a tri-or tetra-hydric alcohol or polyoxyalkylene polyol of functionality 3-4. Preparation of the elastomer is by: (1) first preparing a prepolymer of NCO content 2-20 wt.% by reacting (C) with (A) and optionally (B) and then reacting this prepolymer with water and optionally also (B); or (2) first reacting (C) with part of (A) and optionally also (B) and then reacting the prepolymer obtained with a mixture of water, the remainder of (A) and optionally also (B).
