Abstract: A process for the manufacture of partially dehydrated organic polymer polyol dispersions from the reaction of polyhydroxyl compounds and aqueous polymer dispersions wherein the problem of excessive viscosity is overcome by mixing the reactants with a recycled partially dehydrated polyol polymer dispersion, removing water from the reaction mixture, removing a portion of the partially dehydrated polyol polymer dispersion, and recycling the remainder.

Abstract: The invention relates to a process for the continuous polymerisation of vinyl chloride under conventional conditions of pressure and temperature in the presence of water, an emulsifier, a water-soluble inorganic initiator, where a mixture is prepared from at least some of the total amount of the water and at least some of the total amount of the emulsifier and in addition an aliphatic alcohol having 12 to 30 carbon atoms, and this mixture is heated to temperatures above the melting point of the aliphatic alcohol with adequate stirring. This mixture (predispersion) is combined in a reaction zone with the remainder of the water and of the emulsifier, and the total amount of monomers and initiator, and is then polymerised. A proportion of the resultant reaction mixture is withdrawn from the reaction zone and used to obtain the polymer in a conventional manner. The polymers prepared according to the invention are used for the preparation of plastisols.

Abstract: Vinyl chloride is polymerised opt. with is not >30 wt.% of other copolymerisable monomers, in presence of free-radical catalysts, dispersing agents, polymerisation additives, and sorbitan esters. The esters used are liq. at room temp., their acid gps. are derived from branched-chain satd. carboxylic acids, and they have a hydro-lipophile equilibrium value 7 (pref. 3-7). Vinyl chloride is pref. polymerised in a closed system. In such a system polymer solids, e.g. sorbitan mono-palmitate, are not readily introduced. Certain solvents, e.g. toluene, are retained by the polymer; PVC contg. entrained polymer is not suitable for packaging. The method overcomes the problems of solvent retention.
