Abstract: Use of sulphur concrete for prodn. and lining of salt-, acid-alkali- and solvent-resistant pipes and containers in claimed. The S concrete is obtd. by mixing molten S and dicyclopentadiene as binder with aggregates at 120-160 degrees C. The time for which S and dicyclopentadiene act on one another at the selected temp. is set according to a specific area on a graph of time against temp. S concrete obtd. has improved resistance to chemicals and solvents. e.g. total wear on exposure to (1) 0.1 mol/l NaOH, (2) 6.1 mol/l NaOH was (1) 0.01 mm/year, (2) 2.77 mm/year when using S concrete (I) contg. 22 wt % binder consisting of 95/5 S/dicyclopentadiene. A standard S concrete control sample, (II) contg. 24 wt % S binder dissolved in 3-4 days when exposed to 6.1 mol/l NaOH. S concrete prodn. may take place in 2 steps, and allows mixing binder components in one place, storage and transport, before adding aggregates, opt. at a different temp. In an example, 95 pbw S were mixed with 5 pbw liquid dicyclopentadiene at 135 degrees C and left 135 min. at this temp. Liquid binder was poured onto 354.5 pbw hot sand and mixed 15 min.

Abstract: In the prodn. of basic aluminium cpds. of the formula Al2(OH)n(A)6-n.1/x (I), (where n is 1,2,3,4 or 5; A is bromide, sulphate or nitrate; and x is the valence of A), (a) an aq. soln. of aluminium bromide, sulphate or nitrate contg. is not >25 g./l. Al is treated with a is not >1.05 mol./l. soln. of an amine of mol.wt. 250-500 in a water-immiscible organic solvent; and (b) the aq. and organic phases are sepd. from each other. (I) are useful as ingredients of antiperspirant and haemostatic prepns. They can also be used for hydrophobising textiles, as tanning agents, as flocculating and phosphate-pptg. agents in water purificn., and in the prodn. of fire-resistant materials. Use of liq. ion-exchangers (i.e., organic solns. of amines) permits more rapid ion-exchange and reduces appts. costs, while the liq. ion-exchange is less sensitive towards contamination and poisoning than solid ion-exchange resins. The amt. of chemicals and wash water required for regeneration of the ion-exchanger is smaller.
