    Abstract: Disclosed is a method for at least partially removing formic acid from an aqueous solution containing formic acid, cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol, wherein the formic acid is decomposed on on a basic metal oxide made of metal from groups 2, 4, 5 12 and/or 14 or on a precious metal of groups 8 - 11 on an oxidic carrier in the form of a decomposition catalyst. Preferably, a method for further processing reaction products of cyclohexane oxidation is used, comprising the following steps: (i) extraction of the product gas mixture obtained during cyclohexane oxidation with an aqueous washing liquid, an aqueous solution containing carboxylic acid being obtained; (ii) separation by distillation of the aqueous solution containing carboxylic acid obtained in step (i) to form an aqueous solution containing formic acid, cyclohexanone and Cyclohexanol in addition to other organic minor components, and to form a carboxylic acid mixture, whereby the carboxylic acid mixture is further processed in the usual manner to form 1,6-hexandiol, (iii) the formic acid is at least partially removed from the aqueous solution containing formic acid, cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol obtained in step (ii) by decomposing the formic acid on a basic metal oxide made of metal from groups 2, 4, 5, 12 and/or 14 or on a precious metal of groups 8 - 11 on an oxidic or non-oxidic carrier in the form of a decomposition catalyst, (iv) the aqueous solution containing cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol obtained in step (iii) is further processed to form epsilon-caprolactam, or the aqueous solution containing cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol obtained in step (iii) is used as a washing fluid in step (i).

    Abstract: The invention relates to a method for producing 1,6-hexanediol and, optionally, e-caprolactone. According to the inventive method, the carboxylic acid obtained by oxidizing cyclohexane is esterified, the esterified mixture is separated into an ester fraction and a bottom fraction, and the ester fraction is hydrated so as to obtain 1,6-hexanediol. The bottom fraction is hydrolyzed with water and is returned into the esterified mixture. Hydrolyzing the bottom fraction with water allows the method to be simplified while preventing metal oxides from being emitted and being deposited on parts of the installation, a phenomenon that occurs during reprocessing of the bottom fraction by means of reesterification.
