    Abstract: Halogenation of cyclopropyl-methyl ketone (CPMK) is effected with at least one dihalo-triorganophosphorane of formula (R)3P(X)2 (I) at 80-130 deg C, where (I) is prepared in situ from a triorgano-phosphane oxide or sulphide of formula R)3P=A (II) and a halogenating agent. The novelty is that (II) is used in a catalytic amount. R = optionally saturated 1-20C aliphatic hydrocarbyl; or phenyl or (1-4C)alkyl-phenyl (both optionally substituted by 1 or 2 of F, Cl and NO2); X = Cl, Br or I; A = O or S. Also claimed are: (i) the halogenated product obtained by the process; and (ii) the preparation of cyclopropyl-acetylene (CPA) by treating the halogenated product as in (i) with a strong base at -33 to +250 deg C.

    Abstract: Process for halogenating cyclopropyl methyl ketone (I) comprises reacting (I) with a dihalophosphorane of formula R3PHal2 (II) at 80-200 deg C. R = 1-20C saturated or unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbyl group or a phenyl or (1-4C alkyl)phenyl group optionally substituted by 1-2 of F, Cl and/or NO2; and Hal = Cl, Br or I. Also claimed are (i) a halogenation product obtained as above; and (ii) the production of cyclopropylacetylene (III) by treating the halogenation product with a strong base, especially KOH in a glycol ether, at -33 to 250 deg C.
