Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To furthermore improve the structure of a reaction layer including electrode catalyst so as to furthermore enhance the output power of a fuel cell at low current density. SOLUTION: A film-electrode unit which comprises a polyelectrolyte-film having a first and a second surface wherein both surfaces are in contact with porous reaction layers and gas partition layers, and wherein one of the two reaction layers includes noble metal as black powder, in the film-electrode unit for a polyelectrolyte-fuel cell where the reaction layers include noble metal catalyst carried on carbon and ionomers.

Abstract: A ternary platinum alloy catalyst on a conductive carbon carrier for use in fuel cells is disclosed. For the production of the catalyst, nitrate salts are used as precursors of the alloy components and all alloy components are deposited concurrently on the carbon carrier. This method of procedure yields ageing-stable catalysts with high oxygen mass activity.

Abstract: The invention provides a membrane electrode unit for polymer electrolyte fue l cells consisting of a polymer electrolyte membrane, both faces of which are in contact with porous reaction layers and gas distributor layers. The reaction layers conta in noble metal catalysts supported on carbon and a proton-conducting polymer, a so- called ionomer. The membrane electrode unit is characterised in that at least one o f the two reaction layers also contains a noble metal black.

Abstract: Platinum alloy catalyst contains 40-60 atom % Pt, 10-20 atom % Rh and 20-50 atom % Fe in the form of alloying particles of average diameter of less than 10 nm on an electrically conducting carbon support. An Independent claim is also included for the production of a Pt alloy catalyst comprising: (a) preparing a support suspension of the carbon support in water; (b) heating the suspension to the boiling point and maintaining at that temperature during the following steps; (c) adding aqueous solutions of hexachloroplatinic acid and rhodium chloride and also iron nitrate; precipitating out Pt, Rh and Fe by slowly adding caustic soda; (e) reducing the precipitated out compounds by adding an aqueous reductant; (f) removing the catalyst from the aqueous phase of the suspension; (g) drying the catalyst; (h) calcining the catalyst in an inert atmosphere at 700-1000o C for 0.5-2 hours; and (i) reducing the temperature from 700 to 500o C for a further 0.5-2 hours.

Abstract: Membrane-electrode unit consists of a polymer electrolyte membrane having a first side and a second side both having porous reaction layers and gas distributor layers. The reaction layers contains precious metal catalysts supported on carbon, and ionomers. One of the reaction layers additionally contains a precious metal. An Independent claim is also included for the production of a membrane-electrode unit comprising: (a) applying a reaction layer containing a precious metal on the first side of the polymer electrolyte membrane; (b) applying the second reaction layer on the second side of the polymer electrolyte membrane; and (c) contacting the reaction layers with the gas distribution layers. The step of applying the reaction layer on the first side of the membrane comprises preparing an ink by mixing the precious metal and the supported catalyst in a solution of an ion-conducting polymer in a solvent, dispersing and homogenizing the ink, coating the first side of the membrane with the ink, and finishing the reaction layer by drying the coating. Preferably the total thickness of one reaction layer is 5-100, preferably 10-50 microns.
