Abstract: PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain a low irritative and highly foamable cationic surfactant having a high quality. SOLUTION: This method for producing the cationic surfactant comprises reacting an amine with cationizing agents of formula I (R2 -R4 are each a 1-3C alkyl; Y is H, hydroxy; A is OH, a halogen, a 1-4C alkyl sulfate; Z is a halogen; n is 0-5) and/or formula II. Therein, an aqueous solution (hereinafter referred to as a cationizing agent solution) containing the cationizing agents of formula I or/and formula II and controlled to a pH of 7-11 is changed into a device for forming a thin film, and the formed thin film of the cationizing agent solution is subjected to the removal of volatile components. The formed dried cationized agents are used as the above-mentioned cationizing agents. The reaction is performed at room temperature to 150 deg.C as such or under vacuum, while steam or an inactive gas is blown into the cationizing agent solution. The production method can avoid the thermal deterioration of the cationic surfactant, efficiently remove the volatile components generating irritative orders in the easy operation, and give the objective high quality compound not causing the deterioration of the smell even with time.

Abstract: PURPOSE:To obtain a compound having excellent color and odor and high quality at a low cost by preparing a reaction solution containing benzalkonium halide from dimethyl-t-amine and a benzyl halide and flowing the reaction solution in the form of a thin film in an inert gas or steam. CONSTITUTION:A solution containing benzalkonium halide of formula (R is 8-30C alkyl or alkenyl) is produced by reacting a dimethyl-t-amine with a benzyl halide. The solution is flowed in the form of a thin film in a flow of a gas inert to the benzalkonium halide or in a steam flow. The evaporation of unreacted benzyl halide is promoted, the odor is improved and a benzalkonium halide having high quality is produced by this process. The contact area of the solution with the steam or inert gas can be increased without causing the foaming of the solution and the effect of the treatment can be improved by flowing the solution in the form of a thin film. The benzalkonium halide is a cationic surfactant useful as a sterilizing agent, an antiseptic agent, a wound cleaning agent, etc. The process enables the production of the compound with easy operation in a short time.
